Way to go, Coach Doherty!

I think this one was a tag team effort from Coach Doh and JJ working together.

From an actual basketball standpoint, I think we finally have a slasher who can "get to the rim at will". Haven't had a guy like that since Hop, and it should really open up our offense, which currently consists of standing around the perimeter waiting for someone to shoot. Nothing can elevate a college team more quickly than a guard who can get to the paint and free up other players....not to mention we have the JUCO Williams there to ease the transition. Hate to knee-jerck too much, but we might not suck next year...

we may still suck next year, but we won't suck the year after, and beyond. Doh has completely recreated the roster and it has some talent on it. It also has some depth. Now, w/Williams, McCoy & Dubois in the backcourt, we have some kids capable of handling. Even a guy like Frank despite beinbg a very undersized 4, has handle, and can really pass.
This commit is huge, but more then that, it'll be interesting to see the repercussions on the roster. As Prof X pointed out a few weeks back, the roster seems to be on the verge of a pretty major shake up.
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones

Picking the Ponies over Kentucky (the Wildcats' 2007 trainwreck notwithstanding) is a major coup for Coach Doherty.
Was Hopkins even rated No. 10 in THE NATION at his position? I know Hop had a ton of offers, but was he a top-10 point guard?
Congratulations, Coach Doherty and staff!
Hop was a 5 star recruit and much more highly sought after than McCoy. However, this is still a fantastic get for SMU.
Hop was a 4 star recruit and was also ranked #10 in the nation. Whether or not he was more "sought after" is probably up for discussion.

Hop's 5 star rating was from Rivals which has McCoy as a 3 star. Sorry for the confusion and thank you for posting Hop's Scout rating- I had always assumed he was 5 star on both services.

Big difference between McCoy and BHop is that Bryan's ranking was pre-injury. As I think HoopFan was prone to say in those days, Hop was never the same after the injury he incurred prior to joining us here on the Hilltop. He lost his jump out of the gym and BHop became Was Hop.

And I HATE it when people would throw this in the Hop's faces because I am very grateful for both of their hardwork....but McCoy only costs us one ship.

Technically I would say it cost 2 since someone will have to leave to make room. The same goes for any additional signees this year. If someone is added, someone must be subtracted. And that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Under that scenario, adding another player wouldn't "cost" another scholarship, it would just make better use of an already-existing 'ship.

That ESPN review, I believe it was, dinged his speed but he must have some speed as "McCoy also runs track and was a member of the 2007 state championship 4x100 meter relay team."
Even if he was the 4th fastest that has to be pretty good right?
