Their entire endowment is just over a billion...

True, however, they aren't exactly destitute.

According to the 2008 (College) Edition of U.S. News

TCU - $ 1,197,453,000 (reported endowment)

SMU - $ 1,127,671,000 (reported endowment)

And this doesn't take into account the Barnett Shale

Gas reservoir sitting beneath their campus that they

are preparing to tap into.

Established in 1873, I would have expected TCU to have had a much larger endowment than SMU (1911).

Not sure where Corp gets his info but it is factually incorrect. The endowment world is officially ranked by data put out by NACUBO (National Assoc. of College and University Business Officers). Every year they rank endowments based on information sent in by those that really know - the head business officers of each university.

For the last several decades SMU has had a larger endowment then TCU. As of the end of 2007 SMU is at 1.32 billion, (54th in the country) and TCU is at 1.87 billion (62nd in the country).

Later this year SMU will enbark on our centennial campaign, and although it is not public what that goal will be, it is safe to assume it will exceed 500 million. It will take 2-3 years to complete. Our last capital campaign had a 300 million goal and ended up achieving near double that. A safe prediction is that SMU will be near a two billion endowment university by 2011.

That does not include the 250 million which will land on our campus for the Bush Library, and does not include the gifts made in the last several years to expand the land area of our campus by over 30%.

It is extremely doubtful that TCU will catch us in this area in our life time.

Not looking for congrats - just wanting the record to be set straight. I see lots of frog posts about endowments all the time and the information always seems to be wrong.

The information came from the 2008 Edition of U.S. News

& World Report - "America's Best Colleges 2008"

I'm quite sure you're familiar with this annual publication.

Additionally, TCU's official Fact Book shows their endowment

to already be at $ 1,316,402,000. as early as May 31, 2007.

Go figure. Now as for Texas A&M's endowment....

The main reason Aggies are well endowed is from pulling on their "thing" all the time.

What TCU "officially" turned in to the NACUBO at the end of 2007 was 1.187 billion. That will be official until NACUBO reports again at the end of this year.

Now that you mention it, I am familiar with US News and World report - glad to see you believe what they say since they say SMU is the 67th best University in the nation and TCU is way down at number 100 - tied with OU.
