This Thursday the Richardson Chamber of Commerce is having June Jones as the guest speaker at the monthly luncheon. He will be introduced by AD Steve Orsini.

Me, being a member of the Richardson Chamber am very glad to see SMU, SO and JJ reach out to a wider market.

Richardson is a great place to live and SMU could get some nice relationships with Telecom Corporations and other businesses here.

All I am doing is showing up for Chamber. SMU made the contact and made the effort to reach out to this market.

I wonder what other Metroplex communities SMU has reached out too.

Allen, Plano, McKinney, Frisco, Ennis, etc.?

I'd love to see SMU make an effort to market in Collin County...the closest I've seen were mini-helmets at Walgreens in west Plano around Christmastime. Academy stores and Sports Authority stores up here don't carry any SMU stuff...I have to go to the bookstore for everything.

They should definitely make a push to the communities up here - if nothing else to enhance their recruiting presence at Allen and some of the other high schools.

I could not agree more. We should have a lot more presence throughout the area. I am sick of going to Lowes and finding everything ATM, Tech, UT but nothing Pony.

And while I am on the subject, people need to recognize that we have the best emblem of any team in the nation. The galloping Mustang is a winner.

Definitely...this is one of my biggest peeves. It's not just bars either - I took my son to Gattitown in Frisco a few weeks ago. Every major school but SMU had a banner up - absolutely ridiculous.

Folks...ya'll are addressing a problem that has been evident for a LONG time around the Metroplex. SMU is considered a 'third tier' school by the majority of sports fans around here. Kinda like a junior college, more or less. And, as we all know, Dallas sports fans only love a WINNER! (something that SMU has not been in a long, long time...) Coupled with the fact that SMU is in a predominantly PROFESSIONAL SPORTS MARKET (Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars, Rangers, etc.), as well as the Big 12.

The best (and most effective!) way to address this problem is to strongly inform those businesses that they need to put up signs or carry merchandise for the ONLY DIV. 1-A COLLEGE IN THE METROPLEX since many of their customers are SMU alumni and students.

If I could stock my car with SMU items (flags, pennants, ballcaps, etc.), I'd push 'em on every sports bar/restaurant/nightclub, etc. that caters to the sports-minded public.

I refuse to shop at Academy anymore for that very reason. And ditto for the PGA Superstore. They have golf gear for schools/teams that couldn't possibly have an alum within 100 miles of here.

You know, it really is a Dallas thing, not a Metroplex thing. Even when TCU sucked (and oh yes, Froggies with short memories, you did suck), they had a presence in the area. We used to ask stores about why they had every other school represented, and the answer was that SMU kept such a tight leash on their logo that it was too much hassle. That seems to be changing. I've even spotted a few SMU items around Fort Worth in the last few months. Not a lot, mind you, but more than before.

I thought the Richard Sweet "flash-in-the-pan" administration loosened the reins on this policy. I always ask where the SMU items are - just to hear them ask, "What's that?" Keep requesting SMU stuff. Even if they won't stock it, you can at least irritate/annoy store managers to the poiint they wish they had it just to shut you up.

I'm starting to see more SMU stuff around Dallas as well. I agree that doing things like this with the Richardson Chamber of Commerce can only benefit SMU. As Steve Orsini said in the press conference introducting JJ, the athletic department has done their job. We now have a fantastic stadium with state of the art facilities and a coach with instant credibility. We also appear to be operating on a level playing field with our competitors in regards to recruiting. He and his staff have solved some of the most vexing problems facing SMU football for the past 20 years. We've got to start getting Ford filled up on gameday. There's just no way around it.
