SMU basketball recruit asks for release

SMU basketball signee Jarred DuBois, of Westchester High in L.A., has asked to be released from the national letter of intent he signed with SMU. His father, Gary DuBois, wrote in an e-mail that the request is due to personal reasons.

SMU confirmed that the request has been made. Coach Matt Doherty has not decided on a course of action yet.

DuBois is a 6-3, 170-pound guard. SMU recently added Paul McCoy, a top-10 ranked point guard by Scout.com, and Derek Williams, a junior college point guard, to its signing class.

Nice that we hold the cards here.
If he is as good as advertised, hopefully Coach D can convince him he should honor his commitment to SMU.
Of course, if Williams and McCoy are as good as advertised, we might not care whether this kid shows up or not.

Sad thing is we won't know if the request was legit or otherwise motivated until we see which school he signs with.

Baylor maybe?

The ironic thing about this situation is that I heard Dubois was a tough, competitive kid. We improve our team by signing a couple of guards and this kid wants out. As far as I'm concerned let him go. If he wants to be a baby and run away from a little competition then let him go. We don't need any soft players on this team.

Well, if Doherty decides to grant his release, Jared better have a solid Plan B already in play since the late signing period ends May 21. Or else, he's going to have to go JUCO or sit out a year.

Who knows what the reason is...kid is suddenly realizing he'll be too far from home, the other guards are going to squeeze him for playing time, he may be barely cutting it grade wise and could think our academic standards could kick his butt.

Better to know now than to get a couple of months into it and realize this wasn't a good thing. Of course, we may have a scholarship to give out now or one of the kids we thought was going to a prep school may be coming.

But we are seeing this happen a lot. This one. Of course, our boy McCoy wanted out of Pepperdine, the SOC kid wanted out of his deal at LSU. The latter two were because of coaching changes. It happens.

I'm sure Doherty is putting a lot of pen to paper right now.

Coach Doherty should stall until after May 21 and THEN grant the kid his release.

How about a quick no. We committed to him - time to honor your word.

Of course - that would not be the case if we had switched coaches.

why force a kid to honor a commitment when he obviously doesn't want to come? For whatever reason...let him go. Obviously coach is entitled to hear his reasoning, but I don't see this as a big deal. We need players who want to be here and are willing to compete for playing time and to ultimately accept their roles to make this program better.

I hate to see this but he probably has a Pac 10 offer & who can blame him. Hopefully Doh will take advantage of this opportunity & pick up one of the best remaining unsigned players in the country (Morgan would be nice).

I really thought he was the top recruit based on his outstanding play vs. the level of competition he played.

Apparently Kentucky has an opening as well. For little SMU to steal a basketball recruit from the Wildcats speaks volumes. "Trust Coach Doh" just took on a whole new meaning.
I haven't been this blissful since Bliss. Sorry.
