Nice Espn ArticleModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower TT runs the Air Raid
Mizzzou runs the Super Fastball Both are really the R&S as any X&O guy knows. They are big time BCS schools not mid-majors. Somebody tell Tom Brady not to run 4 wides because it is the R&S and everybody knows you can't run it in the NFL. Barry Sanders was masteful under JJ and Mouse in Detroit. He quit football when they left.
Let me say it one more time:
4 WR's does not equal the Run and Shoot! Actually any true X & O guys knows Leach took Norm Chow's reads from BYU and adapted them to fit his scheme. There are very little choice routes in the Air Raid system. Ask Tom if he wishes they could have established the run more in the Super Bowl. As far as June's ratio at Hawaii: 2007: 662 pass attempts; 267 rush attempts (82 by QB) 2006: 615 pass attempts: 291 rushing attempts (81 by QB) 2005: 574 pass attempts: 271 rushing attempts (99 by QB) 2004: 634 pass attempts: 255 rushing attempts (37 by QB) 2003: 754 pass attempts: 307 rushing attempts (43 by QB) Fairly consistent there.....by the way the only pro besides Ashley Lelie that I can find from the last 4 teams is Samson Satele? Where is this starting fullback please give me a name..... By the way listing Barry Sanders is cheating. By the way Barry had his best season after he left the R & S. Also the Falcons which you guys are quick to promote went to the Super Bowl in the 2nd year after June was fired. They threw almost 200 less passes and attempted 200 more rushes and had a higher points per game and more passing TD's? Fluke I guess. Not quite. The Run and Shoot in Houston put up very.....misleading numbers. Yeah the QB threw for 4000 yards but if you throw more than 450 passes a season odds are you would throw for 4000 a season. Moon did it twice in Houston. How many playoff wins did the Oilers have? Falcons? Combined 3-11 in the postseason in the NFL. It is a well established fact that the run has to work for an offense to be SUCCESSFUL. They don't have to be a 3 yards and a cloud of dust...but balance must be sought. As I have stated the run and shoot is a great pakcage, and scheme at the High School and mid range college levels, but not at the top. The spread that Mizzou/West Virginia runs has it's beginning in one of the oldest offenses: "The box." Notre Dame ran it in 1925. Need a picture here we go: ![]() They've taken those plays and implemented them with a fairly simple pass offense and it works. WVU spread offense works because they are such a threat to run. I do not hate the Run and Shoot I just think you guys are over-rating it a tad. Will it get you wins versus UTEP, Rice, Tulsa? Yes. But I'm looking down the road some, to where you guys hopefully want to be. Against Texas. Against the big boys. June is the man to get you to that level. But the next hire will be the one that gets you over the proverbial Top 25 hump. By the way I never said Georgia was average. I SAID THEY HAVE A GOOD COACHING STAFF ALONG WITH GOOD PLAYERS. BUT NOT GREAT PLAYERS. Again Nacho, you are an idiot. He played two more seasons, 2 of his finest actually, and retired because the game wasn't fun. the reason Sanders didn't blast his coaching staff was because he was a class guy. If Sanders had the ego of TO, man those would have been some fireworks. Sanders last season with a FB before the run and shoot: 2628 yards not including the bowl game. Found it Regan Mauia...funny he started all the games after Ronnie Brown left. Let's see if he makes it in Parcells regime in Miami. He had 6 touches and 1 fumble.....I understand he's a blocking back....who should move to guard. Again June Jones is a guy who will get you guys wins and credibility. That's why he was hired. I am more of a pro football fan, and by calling his scheme flawed (which I didn't) I'm speaking mostly from a pro perspective. For college, this offense will do fine. I just find it to be a better package rather than a complete offense. GO Mustangs....
H7life- glad you discovered the paragraph.
An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame-SMU football game and
doesn't care who wins. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower
Thanks discovered it overnight. It's amazing.
For someone who says a lot of things you sure are missing some basic facts...things like Howard's 40 time and only seeing 2 NFL players from Hawaii. By the way, for someone who has written so much about JJ's system you seem shockingly naive (or purposely disingenuous) to overlook the fact that shovel and screen passes are basically part of the running game in his system. In 2007, the top 2 RBs had 42 catches for less than 400 yards. In 2006, the top 2 RBs had 77 catches (67 from Ilaoa) for 946 yards. Quite a difference. Also, Hawaii had a weak schedule in 2007 and ended up running the ball a lot in the 4th quarters of blowouts, so the run/pass ratio was even more skewed. You only noticed Lelie and Satele as players in the NFL from Hawaii? I guess you didn't notice that Hawaii had FIVE players drafted last year, plus several undrafted rookies who were on NFL rosters all of last season (including both tackles, Tala Esera and Dane Uperesa). The backup RB in 2006 was Reagan Mauia. He was drafted (pretty good for a backup who had been a backup DT before being moved to RB!) and was Miami's starting FB all of last season. He beat out the vet FB that Miami signed from Detroit last offseason. The starting RB in 2006 was Nate Ilaoa. Unfortunately for him, Philly (who drafted him) was NOT happy that he showed up for rookie minicamp overweight. So, he was cut...but I expect him to be on an NFL roster next season (maybe Seattle?) if he gets his weight down. For the record, JJ *really* was on him about his weight while he was at Hawaii and he was much lighter in 2006 than 2005, but his weight gain before the rookie mini-camp hurt his NFL chances. At least you saw Samson Satele on your search, the 2006 2nd round pick who was a starting center immediately in the NFL. Parcells has purged much of Miami's roster but not once was it rumored that Satele would be anything except the starting centter for Miami. Rookie starters at C are not too common... How did you miss Ikaika Alama-Francis from the 2006 team? He was a 2nd round pick for Detroit who is expected to start at DE for them this season. Even a very basic search would have found him! The other starting DE in 2006, Mel Purcell, was also drafted. He is with the Browns. So, you could find TWO players in the NFL from JJ's previous 4 teams. I just pointed out FIVE Hawaii players were drafted in 2006 and 2 undrafted free agents from 2006 who stuck all season with the teams they signed with. The breakdown was two DEs, two RBs, LT, RT, C.
Please....I was looking at players from Hawaii's offense. Screen passes and shovels are great and all but to look at them as a basis for a consistent run game..please. Those are considered passes for a reason. The shovel is a great play to get a defense off balance. It is not a consistent play to base getting consistent yards off of.
HAWAII DRAFTED PLAYERS POS ROUND PK(OVR) TEAM Ikaika Alama-Francis DE 2 26(58) Detroit Samson Satele OG 2 28(60) Miami Reagan Mauia RB 6 7(181) Miami Melila Purcell DE 6 26(200) Cleveland Nate Ilaoa RB 7 26(236) Philadelphia On offense, the only player that was taken and kept was Samson Satele, please go to NFl.com or ESPN and show me the draft list from 2006? On offense please......Samson Satele is a huge man, and talented of course, what this has to do with the Run and Shoot....but I should have stated the most notable draftees from Hawaii. Where is Death? At least his comments had to do about the X and O's of the game. Shuffle passes....here's a question how many shuffle passes did Tom Brady, Peyton manning, Carson Palmer, Tony Romo, Drew Brees actually do last year. By the way I mean that they were called plays. Maybe 40 combined for an entire season for all theses guys. Screen passes are passes to draw in the defenses (usually on a blitz) to get the runner in open space. Draw Plays accomplish this in the NFL. Hell, Steve Spurrier at Florida was considered a master at draw plays and screens. I guess he runs the run and shoot also. The only problem is that while he was there Florida was at it's best when he had Fred Taylor there.
I always know I'm right when someone calls me an idiot. It happens all the time. Well I guess we're both right about TT. I'll get back to you on Mizzou.

re: Texas Tech... this is a scheme that I just love. I've read a lot of articles/interviews with Mike Leach and the guy seems like a fun person to be around, and his offensive philosophy is one I just love. He doesn't care about running or the aforementioned balance... he throws it all the time and even goes for it on 4th down in his own territory in the first quarter! That takes balls!
The last two Texas Tech bowl games his team has rallied from a 7-38 deficit to win 44-41 and from 14-28 with just over 5 and half minutes left to win 31-28. Say what you will about his scheme, but it's exciting to watch and has the ability to win late after trailing. My apologies to SMU fans... but as a football fan I love and respect any offense that can do the things Leach's does... ![]()
Obviously you've never seen him in a TV interview. GO MUSTANGS!
FIGHT ON!
I thought this was an interesting article about the R&S and its legacy. No matter what you say this offense has had a dramatic effect on all levels of foootball fro pee-wee to the NFL. 3- 4-5 wides are now a staple of football thanks to the R&S. JJ and Mouse revolutionized football.
I was just thinking that. Of course, it is usually entertaining to watch drunk guys make idiots of themselves, so Leach has that going for him.
I love this clip of him acting like a meteorologist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSPcMXWJjUg
