First Hawaii high school player to commit to SMU?

Postby Garret » Wed May 21, 2008 12:43 am

Ekolu Soon, a speedy slot receiver from Kamehameha, becomes the first Hawaii high school player to go to SMU with June Jones as the Mustangs head coach. And if there was someone from here who played for the Dallas private school previously, I never heard of him (I’ll check later with my boss, Paul Arnett, who grew up in Big D).

Soon, who also considered Army and Utah, said he’s getting a preferred walk-on deal. Jeff Reinebold, who will be his position coach (still seems strange that Sun God has the WRs after mentoring the D-line here), recruited him.

Everyone knows the sun goddess is Amaterasu. I am now skeptical of anything this reporter says as he has lost all credibility.

Isn't the boss he refers to the guy who wrote an article about how June Jones' office was in a "refurbished" Ford Stadium and overlooked weathered aluminum seats?

Maybe he lost his Amaterasu status when he became a paid coach.

Not sure how competitive Hawaii track is but walkons with real speed have some potential. The great majority of walkons simply don't have the measureables to play Division 1A.

Rivals shows him committed to Army but not signed. Although the far majority of Army commits show as being committed but unsigned. Do they do theirs differently than other schools, or is it just not updated.

you don't want to start the Army/Navy /Air Force unlimited scholarships debate again do you. What it means is that he was one of about 85-100 kids that Army was trying to get into their program and/or prep school.

I can follow you in that there are about 40 "committed but unsigned" kids listed. What caught me by surprise was that only 3 show as being signed. Are they just not updated or do they run their little process that slowly?

I don't think the Academy recruits sign Letters of Intent on signing date-they have their own unique application procedure. Generally that signing connotation on Rivals is to show on signing date or thereafter that a commitment has been confirmed as a signed letter of intent-but I don't think it really applies to the Academies. If you check Navy and Air Force's lists the same lack of "signees" is shown.

Another SMU/Hawaii high school connection in athletics is Malcolm Holland. graduated from the Punahou School & played at least a few years of tennis as a walk on in the early 80's
