Iowa State Guard looking to transfer...smu in the hunt

The Des Moines Register asked for a list of schools requesting permission to talk to Johnson through Iowa’s open records law.


As of Tuesday, those schools were Arkansas, Cincinnati, Marquette, Mississippi, Ohio State, Sam Houston State, Southern Methodist, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Wyoming.

At 6-7, he's actually a forward and from Corsicana. Pretty solid numbers for a guy who played in the Big 12. Cyclones were bad this year but still. Of course, if he came, he wouldn't be eligible until 2009-2010.

Looks like he plays like he transitioned to guard his Soph season from the numbers you posted. Over 5 3pt FG attempts per game. His boards were down from 7.9 per game his Fr year to 4 per game his Soph year. His 3pt attempts increased by 35% from his Fr to Soph season. FG % down 5 percentage points and his blocks less than half his freshman year. Plus the article says he's a guard.

On another note he had 7 20pt games last season. The teams he faced in those games were: Alabama, Albany, Missourri, Ok. St., Kansas, Kansas St., Kansas. Very inconsistent as he averaged 12.4ppg on the season, but this kid appears to be someone that could be a serious player in CUSA, ESPECIALLY after sitting out his tranfser season working on his perimiter game.

Exactly the type of missing piece needed at this time to get us in position to compete in 2009-2010. I don't think next year will be our year although we will be improved. Someone mentioned we might have an extra scholarship-I've been hoping it was a quality transfer and even better with quality Big 12 experience. We certainly don't need a picked over last minute freshman just to fill the roster and sit on the bench all year. I hope we get this guy.

Probably true, CDR is a 6-7 guard. I should have noted that he was listed on the ESPN file as a forward. If you read the story, it looked like he and Greg McDermott had a falling out.

I completely agree with you here. Following this season we will only graduate Bamba. With the experience gained by our younger players and adding in a proven scorer transferring from the Big 12, your '09-'10 roster has the potential to compete for NCAA Tourney bid:

C- Faye Sr., TK Jr.
PF- Dia Jr., Mook So.
SF- Malone Jr., Nayakundi So.
SG- Johnson Jr., Harp Jr.
PG- Williams Sr., McCoy So.

Faye isn't a center. He's probably a long SF, or if needed, a fast PF, but he's at his best on the perimeter.

Flip flop him and Dia in my psuedo projected line-up if you like but in talking with people that have played with Faye, he isn't a 3. A big that can step out, but not a perimeter player. Does not have the handles to do so from what I undertsand.
