At first I thought the same as the guy from LA who wrote the article. That is, uh-oh, now we've gone and alienated those tight-knit LAISD coaches. Worse yet, I said to myself, first it's Tyler Lee in football throwing down the "wait til SMU tries to recruit here again," and now it's SoCal!

Fortunately, I heard Doh was at a 'regulars-only' breakfast meeting in south central LA, so he must already be mending those fences.
the info posted as the 'reasons' for denying a release sounds like a stock response used by D1 schools in denying a release.

This being the case, I guess Dubois could still just not show up and transfer, then sit out a year correct?

Anyway,

WELCOME TO THE HILLTOP JARED!
Dubois can spend a year at a prep school and transfer to any other school, without sitting out, and still have 5 years to play 4.

or, he can go to a junior college without sitting out and play 1 year, and transfer to any other school, with 3 years eligibility remaining. He's a full qualifier.

or, he can refuse to send SMU his trancripts and test scores, preventing his admission to the university. If he isnt admitted before classes start in August, then he HAS to be released from his LOI.

Or, he can go to another D-1 school and sit out a year, redshirt, and still have 4 years remaining.

You may want to hold off on welcoming this kid to the Hilltop, a player who doesnt want to attend your school cant be forced to, and it is the epitomy of foolishness to try. Judging from the L.A. Times article, Dubois seems fairly adamant about not coming to SMU. A player in that situation has other options. Dubois isnt going to come here, and no amount of pressure or posturing on SMU's part can force him to. All SMU can do is make it harder on the kid to go somewhere else. Is that really the position we want to take?

Frankly, I'm having real trouble understanding why so many of you are so intent on adding another disgruntled, unhappy player who doesnt want to be here to our locker room?

I doubt Coach Doh wants a player that doesn't want to be here, so I would assume there is more to this story. As previously suggested by another poster, the theory of Doh having a problem with where he wants to transfer or why he wants to transfer is the likely sticking point.

XTC, I do agree that we don't want anyone here who doesn't want to be here. But as you pointed out, he could go JUCO, or Prep School, or one of those routes, or not gain admission. I don't think the kid should be given carte blanche to sign with any school THIS FALL. And letting him out of his LOI allows that. I doubt he'll be here this fall. And if he shows up, then hopefully he'll enjoy it here and decide to stay and Doh and the team should make him feel welcome. My view is that by letting him out of his LOI makes every other coach declare open season after the signing date for Doh recruits. These letters either mean something or they don't. If they don't then why have them. Just let the players decide where to go on the first day of class like the rest of the students in the University. I remember having a friend who was on the wait list at his first choice school and got in the car not knowing whether to keep going southwest or turn due south to his first choice. When he got to the point of no return, he called the admissions director at this first choice and was told, no everyone is reporting for class. And he kept heading southwest. Of course that extends the recruiting season to the detriment of smaller schools like SMU.

Hypothetically just imagine if every recruit one year wanted to opt out of their commitment to a particular school. Do we let them all out because they have the right to change their minds and then have no one to fill out our roster with? What then?

Hell no, we don't let them out. He's old enough to vote, he's old enough to go to war, so if you ask me, he's old enough to calm down his family or AAU coach or whoever is balking at this and honor a contract he signs.

you let him out if you got a big-time transfer on the line-think the Iowa St. transfer mentioned on here could be a big time alternative that would probably fit our program even better than Dubois.

When the Letter of Intent is signed...there must be the signature of both student athlete and a parent. The parent sent the email. It may be that the student is not unhappy. We shall see...Go Mustangs!!!

I've been exposed to this type of situations 2x's & it would have been best to let the person walk which is exactly what Doh needs to do here.
I was very excited to see Dubois suit up as a Mustang. I thought he was the highlight of the recruiting class.
No need to waste anyones time bringing him here when he doesn't want to be here. We all make mistakes. He just realized his a little to late.

I'd wager the red or blue would be way more dangerous than the green and white.

I haven't seen Doh in a bandana so he's probably safe as long as he limits it to a tie. Although Doh with a Do Rag would be pretty funny.
