Accident at SMU on Dyer

Post by George S. Patton »

This comes from the DMN web site:

Dallas and University Park firefighters are responding to a reported hazardous materials emergency near Dyer Street on the SMU campus. No injuries have been confirmed. More details to come.

Everyone who has had to endure a fire drill in the past few years will appreciate this: the fire marshal actually has his hazmat situation in which to enforce shelter-in-place.

Seriously, that guy mentions the possibility of this every single fire drill.

I don't think I was ever coherant for those 3AM dorm fire drills.

Here's what happened according to the DMN:

Three people were taken to local hospitals as a precaution this afternoon after workers power washing the outside of a hazardous materials building on the SMU campus triggered an alarm that automatically emitted a fire retardant, officials said.

About 200 people were evacuated from buildings in the area surrounding the 3000 block of Dyer Court after University Park and Dallas firefighters were called to the scene about 1:55 p.m.

No serious injuries have been reported, and fire officials have given the all clear to allow the evacuated people back inside, officials said.

I would have slept through the first one, except that my roommate woke me up, eliciting some choice words from me.

The worst is when you are completely hammered, and have to try to make it down without SMUPD noticing.

We actually had a fire in Boaz my freshman year. Everyone made it out and the fire was doused within seconds. One guy did sleep through the alarm, so his floor mates, just put him in the elevator for the rest of the night, passed out in his underwear.

I must not have been either. I cannot recall anyone official ever talking. Between the fire drills and the drunken jackballs who pulled the fire alarm regularly in Boaz, I did not get as much sleep as I would have liked.

We didn't have a lot of fire drills in Boaz when I was a freshman, as I recall. But we did set alarm clocks for 3 AM every now and then so people could empty the remains of a stale keg into the carpet on the fourth floor and slide up and down the hallway until they were covered in rug burns and stunk like a brewery. Ah, good times.
