If true we have to hope we can find an Orsini-esque replacement. This hire is going to be vital to keep the positive vibe on the Hilltop.
Back off Warchild seriously.

If Orsini leaves it means we finally had a good hire at SMU. Everyone always says we are a stepping stone job, sad thing is, I can't remember anyone ever stepping up! Orsini has gotten more done in his short tenure here then we have in the last 8-10 years combined! The jury is still out on how his coaches will do - but I think everyone would agree things are moving in the right direction. UCF fans didn't b*tch when we stole him from our own conference mates, I think because they knew how much he did for their program. And I will be sad for us, but glad for him if he gets his "dream" job. For some reason, I have faith that Turner and Co. have seen the light when it comes to spending and getting proven leaders - AD's and Coaches.

Is it appropriate to put the outgoing AD on the search committee for his successor?

I would say no unless it were a retiring AD such as the case with Broyles here in Arkansas. The State would have gone into turmoil had the not included him in the search.

With us I say we thank Orisini for a job well done and get to hiring another good one. I wish at this time that Orsini would stay, but I hope that Turner already has his short list ready to work.

My suggestion: One of my favorite AD candidates when the search process was underway last time was Northern Iowa AD Rick Hartzell. Don't laugh; Northern Iowa has a really good I-AA program. Hartzell had been identified as a number of I-A AD jobs in the past. One of the things I thought was most interesting about Hartzell is that he is also a NCAA Basketball referee. Anyway, apparently he quit Northern Iowa recently over "philosophical" differences; by all accounts he really did quit. I say we bring his butt in here to work under the Mob Boss and give him a try out.

Edit: If it comes to it, I bet we hire Tulane's AD.

June left a nice list of Coaching replacements when he left Hawaii, hopefully if Steve leaves he does the same.

I actually thought Hartzell was going to be the guy until Orsini surfaced.

Former AD at Washington State, graduate of Tulsa. Has raised a lot of $ at Tulane. Not much of a track record of putting butts in seats. Did hire Bob Toledo. Arkansas thought he might replace Broyles at one point. Why didn't he, mrydel?

This might explain the plane in Dallas....from DMN

Kevin White, Notre Dame's former athletic director and this year's NACDA president, will have opening remarks before Jones is introduced by Frank Broyles, who recently retired as Arkansas' longtime AD.

The NACDA is meeting in Dallas.

Apparently when they laminated Broyles they decided he could be around for a few more years and that changed their direction.
