Just got back from lunch at the new(ish) Jake's on McKinney. Much better than the original over on Northwest Highway (and not just because the building doesn't feel like it should be condemned.) Burger was bigger and the meat-to-grease quotient was visibly improved .... still not exactly health food, but it also didn't feel like it was going to slide out of the bun and sail across the room, either. Good flavor, and the sauce (1,000 Island?) that comes on the "Jake's Special" burger was damned tasty, too ... and there just aren't enough places out there that serve tater tots with a burger.
Definitely will get a repeat visit.

Was over in Dallas the other day and went to a place on Henderson called The Porch. I asked about the burgers, and the waiter said they were great (of course). He said "if you're kind of adventurous, try the 'STODG BURGER.'"
Far be it from me to turn down a challenge, so I ordered another martini and the stodg burger (never did figure out what the name means).
After ordering, I realized that the thing is a 6-ounce burger. I've got a healthy appetite, so I started looking for an appetizer or a side order I could throw in there ... until it arrived. The bottom of the bun is probably an inch thick, and the top of the bun is at least two inches thick (UNT grads: that's a total of three inches of bread). The burger isn't that big in circumference, but it's close to an inch thick ... comes with all the trimmings ... including a FRIED EGG on it. Seriously, have a defibrulator nearby when you order this thing. One bite, and the yolk is halfway down to your elbow, and you can feel the gears in your heart getting all clogged up by the sudden injection of excess cholesterol.
As weird as the idea of a burger with an egg on it sounds (and even after eating it, it still sounds pretty gross), it's not bad. Maybe it's just exceptionally strong-flavored beef, because the beef flavor came through nicely, overshadowing the other farm animals in attendance at this little culinary dance. They also had some kind of uber-fancy condiment that didn't look like ketchup OR mustard, but it worked. Almost tasted like horseradish - another taste, that I realize doesn't mentally go with a burger, but it was good.
I really felt the urge to run about 10 miles after shoving that thing down, but three martinis prevented that. Got my ride home, and fell asleep on the couch.
Overall: nice meal.

You admit to watching Iron Chef?
I can't tell if that burger sounds delicious or disgusting.
Might have to try it!

The egg makes it sound nasty.

It closed earlier this year when the Holiday Inn sold a few of their properties. It was the "Meadow Inn" for maybe 2 months before closing for good. Apparently they are going to put in shopping, restaurants, residential, etc. around there, kind of like a smaller version of Mockingbird Station. Probably more than you wanted to know, but I work right by there, so I see the stuff around here get flattened on almost a daily basis.
As far as burgers go, has anyone tried out Twisted Root Burger Company in Deep Ellum? It's apparently a gourmet burger, and I have to say, it was pretty darn good. They also have their own Root Beer. Not sure if the flavor on that changes, but when we were there, it was Cinnamon Maple, and it was really good.

For anyone who may have lived in the old Willow Creek Apartments (northwest corner of Walnut Hill Lane & Central Expressway), they're now gone! BIG vacant lot there now which will become something similar to Mockingbird Station, too, I'm told.
All of the slummy apartments on Meadow Road, east of Central Expressway over to Greenville Ave. have also been demolished for a huge 'Mockingbird Station'-type project, like Big Hoss says.
They sure are taking a long time to demolish the Holiday Inn/Meadow Inn. The Troy Aikman Ford dealership which was next door is now gone, too.
Twisted Root Burger Co. sounds interesting. Here's the web site address & other info for anyone who wants to check 'em out.
