The same person who told me that said he's a legit 225 now. Part of it is just a matter of him growing into his frame as he matures physically, eats all the food he can and lifts weights constantly.

I saw him around campus last year without pads and there is no way he was 220. Probably about 210, probably less. If he is actually 225, I see him being very effective. He's still small for an end, but he has a great motor and is very quick

Again, back to my question of "WHAT HAPPENED TO JAMES MAPPS"?

Did he transfer, was he kicked off the team, did he fail out of school, did he go into witness protection.....

I think I read that Mapps was kicked off the team for a violation of team rules.

I thought it was grades but might have been rules. Either way, I understand he is gone.

I think a lot of people would say a run-n-shoot team actually hurts a weak defense since the defensive personnel must be on the field that much more. A run-n-shoot offense scores quickly - often too quickly - forcing the defense to play more minutes than usual.

With a weak defense, playing ball control is crucial. Maybe our D coaches can improve our turnover technique.

According to the SMU preview on cusa-fans.com:

*running back James Mapps, safety Bryce Hudman and quarterback Zach Rhodes all missed spring practice for team rule violations. Jones said he hasn’t talked to Mapps or Hudman and that Rhodes may transfer.

What an awful, awful excuse for a game.

YIKES!

I had no idea the SMU defense was so porous!

How can the SMU offense score 42 points in regulation and still lose?

Bear with me as I get up to speed on being an SMU newbie, but I am accustomed to at least an effort at defense.

Let's hope the new coaches start with improving the defense.

We lost a lot of experience on defense with the class that graduated after the 2006 season, but the coaches didn't help the new blood much last year. There were moments that the young defense showed signs of their potential, but it wasn't enough to make much difference last year. There are some defensive players with a lot of potential and now with a season of experience under their belt, we can only hope that this is their breakout year.

He was in the Highland Park 4th of July parade, so apparently he has settled his issues and is back. I think JJ has set the bar and the players now know the rules, and his rules apply to everyone.

Handy starting in the middle is a big concern[size and talent-wise] when you consider he rarely got a push from his end spot last year and it only gets tougher in the middle. Hopefully someone will step up behind him.
