Postby PonyPride » Thu Jul 03, 2008 6:39 pm

Thursday Conditioning Workout observations

• Maybe it was the upcoming holiday weekend, but the guys were loose – very loose – Thursday afternoon. The sprints were spirited, with two guys standing out for being consistently near the front of their group: offensive linemen Bryce Tennison and Kelvin Beachum, Jr.

• Two freshmen stood out in the pro agility drills (in which two players line up across from each other, race five yards in one direction, touch the ground, 10 yards back the other way, touch the ground, and then sprint back across the middle “finishâ€

Thanks for the update. I keep reading how players are "blowing by" McElroy. Is Drewery that fast, or, is McElroy not as fast as advertised?

It sounds like we might really have something in E.J.

Hard to say. They're not running full-team drills and they're not in pads, and the guys are seeing each other for the first time. Both guys can run — really run — and there's nobody who can look at a guy and tell whether he's a 4.4 or a 4.5, etc. Both can run. What I can say is that Drewery looks just as fast in person as he does in that video clip that's on YouTube that someone posted when he was recruited. He has very long strides (which makes sense for someone listed at 6-foot-6), but that's something I would assume Coach Reinebold will work on — if he shortens his strides, he'll be able to cut much more sharply.
It also should be pointed out that it's not like McElroy gets beaten all the time — EVERY corner gets beaten once in a while, especially when he's not familiar with a new receiver and his moves. There were plays when he stayed with his receivers and knocked down passes — he just happened to be the defender on a couple of plays when Drewery made a nice play.

Well, he better start watching a ton of film on Jarett Dillard. Thanks PP!

Relax — let's see what happens when Coach Odum gets ahold of him.

Has anyone seen Patrick Fleming and David Haynes, at these workouts?

Not sure about Haynes — he might be still rehabbing his knee, or working out in the mornings. But I've seen Fleming, who looks visibly stronger than he did at the end of spring ball. Looks like he's been working really hard.

I wouldn't be surprised if Haynes is done. Patrick, if he buys into the defensive end thing, could be an interesting addition. That guy could get huge!

Wonder how meek they will be when they do.
