The loss to TCU at the end of '97 and the '98 opening loss at Rice were devasting to the program. Really went south after those two.

Yes, it was those two losses in particular. None of the other losses along the way have had anything to do with the state of the program.

One could argue our recruiting class could have been better had we beat TCU in 97, but we still had the "admission shackles" from the Pye regime to deal with. A lot of our '97 team was made up of players from the SWC era which made us competitive. After joining the WAC we really fell off the map. That Rice loss really stung in '98. The field goal against UH in 2005 excercised some of those demons, but it would be nice to blow somone out in Houston for a change. Maybe we can roll up 95 points against UH in Dallas?
