last nite I checked out the Texas 5A Division II State Championship Game replayed on FoxSW featuring Mitchell and Katy High School. You know one thing that has been overlooked is that Katy ran a very conventional I Formation offense last year relying on the running of UCLA recruit Audre Dean. Mitchell really has never operated a multiple set offense with 3-4 receivers before although he excelled in the I Formation hitting on 75% of his passes. Mitchell will face a rather large transition himself in running the Run and Shoot. Reading defenses is considerably different in the I-Formation and Run and Shoot.

Good points.
The spread offense that so many high schools now run and the Run-and-Shoot are far more different than many people think.

I think Katy's been running that I formation since rocks were new. The key is going to be repetitions. I think Willis eventually becomes the starter because there are too many questions with the new faces and just too much inexperience. That said, I think he will also have a short leash.

The battle for second team QB should be interesting.

the announcer last nite said he hit on 75% of his passes. This Season Stat Sheet breakdown Game by Game says 57%. See Link below. Not sure which is correct. Anyway I had just assumed they were throwing the ball all over the field in multiple sets. Actually he rarely threw the ball more than 15 times a game. Surprised me a bit.

Interesting. And it isn't as if the backp qb got a lot of time, either. Also important to look at Mitchell's 06 stats since that is the tape that Morrison and Jones likely looked at, but I can't find those online.

Oh well. Next on the list is Braden Smith. Is he like Romo?

Hard to say, but I don't recall him dropping any snaps while holding for field goals.

Mitchell ran the I formation not the spread. The spread option is a lot different than the Run and Shoot (or the 4 wide as JJ calls his modified version). But the regular spread and the Run and Shoot are not that different. Braden Smith ran the regular spread and from what I understand said that there is not that much difference.

Katy ran an I and a spread, depending on the situation. Yes, Aundre Dean was a very big part of the offense, but so was Bo. If they shut down the run, Bo would start picking them apart. He has the talent and demeanor to play in this offense. Just ask JJ.

Things to know about the run & shoot.

*The formation tells the defense to stop the pass. As a result you get great running out of the offense.

*Everything in the offense is mirrored, as opposed to a conventional strongside/weakside approach.

*The QB's movement is always fronting out. So all runs and passes look the same.

*By rolling out, with the movement of the QB fronting out, the pass protection is simplified. So you are able
to get by with fewer big superior people up front.

*Offense doesn’t vary inside the Red Zone or the Goalline.

*The Run and Shoot allows you to use more skill players.

*The Run and Shoot allows you to always attack the defensive weakness.

*The use of motion helps identify the coverage.

*Motion may give a number advantage.

*Motion also softens coverage and run support (may eliminate run support).

Former run and shoot @ SMU.

1989-1990 Southern Methodist University Forrest Gregg was head coach.
1991-1996 Southern Methodist University Tom Rossley was head coach.

Good Info. Nice to hear Bo has experience running a passing spread offense.
