ASHBURN, VA - The Washington Redskins today announced that they have agreed to terms with sixth-round draft pick Colt Brennan, the 186th overall selection in the 2008 National Football League Draft. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The quarterback is the eighth of the Redskins’ 10 draft picks to sign or agree to terms.

Brennan set 31 NCAA passing records during his three seasons at the University of Hawaii, including tossing 131 touchdowns. He completed 1,115-of-1,584 passing attempts (70.4%) for 14,193 yards, 131 touchdowns, and 42 interceptions in 38 games with 35 starts. Brennan finished second all-time in NCAA history in total offense (14,740), passing efficiency (167.6) and third in career passing yards (14,193).

While at Hawaii, Brennan was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy award following his senior season. As a junior, he completed 406-of-559 passing attempts (70.4 %) for 5,549 yards and an NCAA-record 58 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while starting in all 14 games. He was the recipient of the Sammy Baugh Award, given to the nation’s top passer after establishing or tying 18 NCAA records in 2006. The following season, Brennan completed 359-of-510 passes (72.6%) for 4,343 yards, 38 touchdowns and 17 interceptions en route to leading Hawaii to a 12-1 record and a Bowl Championship Series appearance against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

The 6-foot-3, 201-pound Brennan was a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award (2007) and the Davy O’Brien Award (2006 and 2007). He was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007. Brennan, who turns 25 on August 16, is a native Laguna Beach, Calif.

Unfortuantely, I don't see Colt seeing any action on the field except signaling the play to Todd Collins or Jason Campbell.

Colt "Best Name Ever for a QB" Brennan and the Redskins have agreed to terms of a contract. Sources say it's for four years, with a signing bonus of under $100,000. It figures to be for $295,000 the first year, $385,000 the second, $470,000 the third, $555,000 the fourth -- typical rookie stuff. It all adds up to $1.705 million, so figure it's a little over that.

Four big problems happened:

1. He weighed in at 185 at the Senior Bowl. That shocked people and *really* brought out critics. He got sick the week before the senior bowl and lost a LOT of weight...which was very, very bad timing. He was 207 at the combine and 218 at Pro Day, as comparison points.

2. Right before the draft (at Pro Day) he disclosed a hip injury that would need 8-12 weeks of rehab (preventing him from practicing at the early minicamps). That also prevented him from being able to do private workouts with teams and he was even restricted from flying so he didn't even meet with teams before the draft.

3. Timmy Chang's NFL struggles really hurt Colt, even though if you look at their stats (TD/INT ratio, completion %, passing efficiency, wins, etc.) Colt did much, much better.

4. 3 of his 4 WRs at Pro Day had injuries, which threw off all of their passing drills. So, Colt wasn't able to impress at Pro Day like he did at the combine (100% completion percentage).

And if the Sugar Bowl had gone a different way, he would have been judged much more favorably...

He's really in an ideal situation in Washington. Jim Zorn allegedly loves him, and thinks his skills translate to Zorn's version of the West Coast offense (of course - wouldn't have drafted him otherwise), and with Jason Campbell and Todd Collins ahead of him, they have no need - or even the slightest interest - in letting him play for a year or two, at least. He'll have plenty of time to make sure the hip is healthy, and to learn the offense. Campbell is the clear-cut starter, and Collins showed he's a more-than-capable backup, so Brennan has a great opportunity to collect a paycheck while learning the pro game and getting fully healthy.
