JJ has said over and over that this freshmen class will be a huge contributor. He also said that 15 of these players would not get red-shirted. With that in mind these are the freshmen I have picked to make the team this year.

QB's: Bo Levi and Braden
RB's: None
WR's: EJ Drewery is a lock; also BJ, Cole Loftin, Cole Beasley and Quincy Whittington. (Bryce Lundy could round this out with no freshemen in this group redshirting). Two of them could possibly start.
O-Line: Josh Emshoff
D-Line: Evan Huahlulu, Taylor Thompson (starting); Kevin Grenier, Torlan Pittman
LB's: Victor Jones
DB's: Chris Banjo,

I'm sure I've left some out, but I'm up to 15.

I don't see any way in heck that it makes sense to have both of these guys play this year. You have Willis and Turner both who will be playing. Therefore, I think at most you see 1 frosh QB not redshirt, if any at all...

What makes you think Willis and Turner are going to play? There will be two QB's, granted, just not sure you have the right two.

There is zero chance a true freshman starts at qb this year, barring an injury to Willis. [/b]

Starting a freshman quarterback is like throwing a pass a lot of bad things can happen, and with a frosh at qb it does.

One freshmen may get some playing time at QB, but the only chance of beating Rice, and even having a longshot chance at beating Tech, is if Willis is at QB. You put a freshmen QB against Tech and it'll probably be one the worst beatings Jones will experience as a HC, especilly with Leach running up the score.

This statement isn't logical. If we play a lot of freshman due to merit, it is inherently an upgrade (even if it's an upgrade to mediocre D1 talent or at least an upgrade from "recruiting failures"), so therefore, it IS a positive sign for the program.

i think it's safer to say that it's not a positive sign for this season.

Position start

Postby ozfan » Tue Jul 15, 2008 5:12 pm

In a lot of positions you can start a freshman. The qb is not one of them. In
highschool you might have three or four good players on a team , in D1 ball you will have 11. They will be bigger and faster on a whole than what you would ever see in hs. The qb must beable to think on the fly and adjust to this speed. It would take a very rare frosh qb to do this.

We need to find someone to step up at the LB position, the '90s were good to us at that spot where we could count on our MLB making 10-15 tackles a game. It's been several years since we have had that to count on.

If June Jones wants to start freshmen, then I trust his evaluation more than stallion's. If they are better than what we already have, play them. We will still win more than we did last year. Stallion must have the best college fantasy football team ever.

DeGroat is still dealing with his ankle injury. I haven't asked him recently but I doubt he'll end up playing this year because it gets sore easily and there's enough depth at that position.

I hear Smart stays late every day to run the "defense" in the seven-on-seven sessions after the conditioning workouts. He's built like a truck and seems to have the right passion for the position, too.
