OU Rag Suing UT IT Worker Over Internet Hoax

Postby MrMustang1965 » Tue Jul 15, 2008 11:49 pm

It just gets better and better!

Associated Press
The publisher of Oklahoma's largest newspaper and one of its sportswriters have sued a University of Texas employee who admitted posting a bogus article on the Internet about two University of Oklahoma football players.

The Oklahoma Publishing Co., which publishes The Oklahoman newspaper and newsok.com Web site, filed a civil lawsuit Monday against James W. Conradt, a Nebraska football fan who works as a service manager for UT's information technology department.

The 10-count civil lawsuit accuses Conradt of libel, copyright violations and trademark infringements. It seeks unspecified financial damages.

Conradt, 36, used a template from the newspaper's Web site to publish a fake article on the Internet on July 9 that stated OU quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Landry Jones had been arrested for intent to distribute cocaine, the lawsuit alleges.

Conradt allegedly put a link to the article on his Web site, http://www.darthhusker.com, and on an online message board.

The lawsuit claims Conradt used sportswriter Jake Trotter's byline and various OPUBCO trademarks to give the bogus article the appearance of legitimacy.

A telephone message left Tuesday at Conradt's office was not immediately returned, and court records do not indicate if he has hired an attorney.

Conradt's Web site has been taken down and replaced by a simple message apologizing for the hoax.

"There was a fake news story posted for a few hours Wednesday at this location that was intended to be a joke about Oklahoma football," the message reads. "A link to this site was posted on a Husker fan discussion board. I have decided to take down my entire Husker site.

"I am sorry for any trouble this has caused."

I'm coming to believe, based on the growth in the Tulsa-Springdale-Bentonville triangle and the current dominance of Cheseapeake Energy, GMX Resources, and numerous others from OKC in the natural gas exploration business, that Arkansas and Oklahoma have Texans snowed. Maybe it's the fact that Texans are smug in their patriotism to our country...um...I mean state. Maybe it's the converse...perhaps there are now too many city-folk in Texas from other places that can't tell that the white stuff on top of birdsh-t is birdsh-t as well. But that slow-smile and easy-going manner of those Okies and Arkansans belies aggressive opportunists.

And they are a lot smarter than we think they are. We have just failed to realize that instead of only leaving their states, which we implicitly understand, they actually are making their states better.

And that's just hard to stomach.

No...East Texas...lived in CA for a good while, though.
I was being tongue-in-cheek...well, sort of. The Okies are in-force out here and North Louisiana right now, giving us lots of money for gas leases...stupid money, if you ask me, but we are taking it.
$14,000 per acre and more right now, and climbing.
The Arkansas reference was just me, well, just trying to see if mrydel was paying attention. Dull morning. Sorry...was in bad taste.

In order to get an 11th count, he'd have to take off one of his wingtips.
