Well fellas, this is my initial post. I am probably the only SMU fanatic living in Salt Lake City. I am 31 years old and some of my first memories are going to Texas Stadium in the early 80's and watching the Ponies play A&M, Tech, etc. My father worked in SMU administration and the athletic department for over 25 years. Forrest Gregg even came to my wedding! I went to every home football game from 1989 to 1995. And have either listened to every game on the radio or over the internet since 1998.
This time every year, like many of you, I get that excitement in my belly about SMU football. Hoping to see highlights on SportsCenter...proud to wear my jersey around town. Although I graduated from the Y, I bleed red and blue and will probably die early due to the stress I put myself through willing the Mustangs through every game.
Anyway, came across this article in the NY Times that was written on October 4, 1987. Pretty interesting. Little did everyone know back then that it would take more than 5-10 years to get back. Hopefully our time is now. Enjoy!

Hello, Rooster. I used to live in Salt Lake and was pretty excited when SMU joined the old WAC. Now I think CUSA is a much better fit for us.
I think the garlicburgers served at the Cottonbottom Inn need a mention on the Burger Wars thread.

Can someone remind me again why the DMN sucks at covering SMU football?

Because SMU football is not UT Football, that's why.
Welcome.

Or otherwise newsworthy in a town where the 1500 make up a vast minority and most, judging by the reaction on this board, don't subscribe anyway.
The newspaper doesn't owe SMU anything ,and won't until it earns it.

I don't remember much about the news reporting back in the mid 80's...were the news agencies siding with SMU in their reporting or was it biased and slanted? The only clip I have seen was the one when Dale Hansen cornered the coach and AD with the letters and payments to Stanley. Guess I am trying to get an idea of what it was like back in the day.

That was neither biased nor slanted. That was the truth, unfortunately for us.

That's another team we should schedule. BYU brings a crowd. I enjoyed going with a friend of mine-BYU alum-to AGC and watching BYU thump the frogs with Sarkisian at QB and Chad Lewis at TE.
Now that I think about it, that's about the only circumstance under which I'd be for BYU in a football game. Good fans though.

Yea, BYU definitely travels. I am always torn when they show clips from the Miracle Bowl at LaVell Edwards stadium, which is usually once a game.

Skippy Bayless had a crush on $MU. We also had a nice 10:30 highlite show on Channel 8 hosted by Bill McAtte. The press hated Fred Akers and Barry Switzer's act was getting old.

Part of the lack of SMU coverage by DMN goes back to the days when Dallas
had two news papers the Time Hearld had very big SMU coverage. Better
sports coverage all round.

Was that highlight show you're talking about "Football, Texas Style?" It was on Ch 39; a live show from the Marriott.

No this one was on Channel 8 in about 1979-80 during the height of Mustang Mania-and they big some big bucks into the production and it got a great time slot immediately after the Sports.

Good point, I forgot about the Herald giving coverage to SMU.
