This is only 1 player (albeit the MOST important player), so no, I am not comparing JJ to PB.

It is the responses that remind me of the PB years….if coach likes him than he must be OK.

I doubt JJ is going to limit himself to one QB recruit next year. We currently have how many QBs? If he sees potential, then he is probably going to offer. Are there better prospects out there? Perhaps...and if so, we will probably go after those too. Somehow, I just don't see JJ extending offers just for the hell of extending offers. He obviously sees something in this kid he likes.

At the present there are 5 qb on the roster and several more that have played that position in hs and have switched positions. Dont worry about the SLC signing maybe Jones sees something or it may be he did not get his qb, but either way SMU is not qb short and will have three years to recruit more if it looks like the kid is not up to D1 level

Its a gamble because he realizes that with Southlake's offense Padron could become a star overnite and then every school in the Nation would want him. So he is gambling by offering a scholarship before Padron hits the field.

Cadillac wrote:As far as gamling goes, you can do a lot worse than betting on the QB at SLC. We get in there early and get the committment when we're the only ones really looking at him (an assumption on my part) while everyone else is taking a "wait and see" approach. If we "wait and see", and he's highly successful, we'll probably wait and see him sign somewhere else in February.

I had hoped for someone with more starting time, but at this point... at least he's tall.

It looks like we're on the same page here. Though I don't think there's any risk to JJs reputation. If this guy is a bust, he never sees the field for SMU, and nobody remembers those two weeks in July 2008 when everyone was talking about him.

I think Stallion is once again suffering from premature evaluation.

I mean, this kid could be the next coming of Joe Namath and he wouldn't have started over Riley Dodge at SLC last year.

So what do we know about him? Meaningless statistics from when he was thrown into games last year. What does JJ know after having seen him in 7 on 7? Enough to offer this kid over hundreds of QBs who submitted tape.
And enough to offer this kid over a bunch of "name" QBs -- at least accoring to Rivals.

I do think that Stallion's might be on to something in that if this kid lights it up in the fall, maybe we have a tougher time landing him. Still, calling the kid a "a streatch and a gamble" is in itself a stretch.

As for PB's ability to evaluate talent, let's see how Joe Weatherford looks starting at QB for UCF this year as a RS frosh. He was a legacy kid who would have come to SMU had we offered.

Didn't some other school do almost the exact same thing last year and take a QB that hadn't started a game? I swear I recall almost the same scenario before.

Southlake quarterback Greg McElroy, commited to the Cimson Tide in a similar fashion. If JJ offers this kid in mid summer, over a number of bigger name qb's, that said they were "hoping" to get an offer from SMU, (per scout and rivals) then I will go with June Jones on this one. Anyone that has any doubts, can go and read June's bio or book, I think you will feel much better.

He was 33-for-53 with 3 int and 2TD and 326 yards last year in mop up duty. He threw for 84 yards in Carroll's 22-21 playoff loss to Abilene but will be known for fumbling the snap at the Eagle 10 in the final seconds as Carroll was about to line up for the game-winning field goal attempt.

In the interest of fairness, when Colt Brennan began his college career, he was a walk-on at Colorado before he got into his sexual assault charge mess and then went to a JUCO. I guess JC transfers really don't ratings or something.

But I disagree that this commitment is considered a GAMBLE. First, we do not know if Jones has lost out on all of the other QBs he is recruiting. There could be some that just aren't sure or somebody we're unaware of. Plus, do we really think we're going to take one QB in the 2009 signing class? Yes, a JUCO QB could be in the mix.

I would go by Carroll's history where its last 4 QBs have gone to DI programs, Chase Daniel (Missouri), Greg McElroy (Alabama), Riley Dodge (Texas before switching to and signing with UNT) and Kyle Padron (SMU). When a program has something in place where it can produce consistency out of that position, then it tells you something.

Plus, I would NOT use 7-on-7 results as a legitimate barometer. It's not even real football. When you have some opposing defenses playing 7 DBs on the field, it's bogus. My god, Richland just won the state championship and they suck!!

Personally, I think 7-on-7 has become so media driven that these leagues get more play than they deserve. The key is the relationship the QB develops with his WRs. And if that produces better results in October than June, then I would defer to that.

Just go out and watch him play and decide for yourselves. I know I will. It might be nice if the keeper of the star would get off his fat [deleted] and actually go watch a hs football game in person.

If SMU does get this kid, please keep him away from Jessica Simpson.

The fact that nobody has has a chance to see him play and decide for themselves is precisely why he's a gamble.
