Rumor: SMU dropping its affiliation with ISP

Postby George S. Patton » Wed Jul 23, 2008 8:24 am

For those who don't know, we had been working with them to produce our radio broadcasts for the last two years (I think it's two). They are like learfield communications and host communications. ISP has been working with about 50 other schools including TCU.

If this is true, then I guess we're back to the Mustang Radio Network? But this shouldn't affect our relationship with 1310AM.

I heard we're getting a contract with NBC for national games. Apparently they are in the habit of handing them out to religiously affiliated private schools with mediocre football records over the past decade or so.

Wouldn't we have to reach the level of mediocrity first?

Somewhat interesting, but it makes little difference. If I understand the relationship correctly, the benefit of ISP is that it attempts to sell the advertasing for local broadcasts on a national level. I don't know how profitable it has been for SMU. I know when Orsini was hired, some of the bitter UCF people were ripping on Orsini's deal with ISP, which they considered to be a bad one.

If SMU can sell all the ad time for the local broadcasts and signage itself, then it should not matter except to cut out the middle man.

ISP must've had countless conversations with Bob's, Maggiano's, and....well who else advertises during SMU games? The "Can" academies?

Golly, did you hear this at recess?

Seriously, doesn't a rumor for football usually include something like "I hear we're hiring June Jones" or "some hotshot recruit just committed to us" ... ?

Seriously? How does this affect the football experience for a single one of us? (Oh, wait, it doesn't...)

Just passing along some information regarding SMU, sir. Sorry it didn't measure up to your journalistic standards.

And if I were you, I'd find another career than journalism -- IT'S DYING!!!

Yeah, big newspapers are dying, but thankfully, we get wonderful journalism — thorough reporting and great writing — on this site. Personally, I agree on the ISP thing. I don't much care, because I didn't ever get a THANK GOODNESS ISP IS DOING OUR BROADCASTS feeling. As long as I can still hear the road games, that's all that matters to us.
