More numbers from the weight room

Postby PonyPride » Thu Jul 24, 2008 4:43 pm

So Vic Viloria has been testing guys this week, mostly in the squat, bench press and power clean. Two numbers for true freshmen were rather staggering:

We all know Taylor Thompson is a big (6-6, 256), fast guy. He has thick arms, but the general rule of thumb is that the longer a lifter's arms are, the harder it is to bench press huge weight. With that in mind, consider this: Taylor Thompson bench pressed 405 pounds.

Quincey Whittington is a strong guy. If you see him with his shirt off, it's evident the man has spent a good deal of time in the weight room. However, he also breaks one of the so-called "rules of thumb" when it comes to weight lifting. With a few exceptions, it's generally accepted that even people who work out a lot aren't going to bench press more than twice their own weight. Whittington is listed at 5-7 and 157 pounds, which means his maximum bench press should be somewhere around 314 pounds, right? Wrong - he maxed out on the bench press at 385 pounds.

a buddy of mine (who walked on at A&M during the late 90's) is from the Cuero area and watched Whittington a lot over the past few years. he thinks Whittington was a steal for SMU and that he's a much better player than the LB recruit who signed with A&M. thinks Whittington only "fell" to SMU because he's short.

a 157 pound kid benched 385?

I think I smell a rat. I'd believe it if he were 180 pounds, maybe.

Kelly Turner benched 415 and I think the rest of the O-line is looking pretty good on their bench too.

The great Earl Boykins of the NBA (I think he's on the Bobcats now) is regarded by some as one of the strongest pound-for-pound players in the league. While playing for the Golden State Warriors at 5'5 and 135bs he could bench over 350 lbs. It can happen

Whittington also is a competitive power lifter, and uses an extremely wide grip that reduces the the amount of distance a lifter has to move the weight.

heard will bonilla maxed 425 lbs on bench, pete fleps got 405 lbs, kennemer squated close to 600 lbs.

Heard they are doing the standard max reps with 225 lbs today. Any takers on who will put the bar up the most times?

Haven't heard much about Handy of late. He's got to be one of the strongest.
