Any time you're denying tenure to a bunch of professors or teachers, you're doing something right. However, I can imagine that would get'em riled up for sure :wink:

I think that Baylor is still trying to sort out what it is. Is it a uniquely Baptist institution or is it a liberal arts University with academic freedom? Until they decide which one of those choices they want to pursue, then these issues will continue to come up.

Tell that to people who try to raise a family on a teacher's or professor's salary, knowing that the next superintendent or university president could have them unemployed on a whim. My sister and brother-in-law are both professors and were about to earn tenure when the school hired a new university president, who denied tenure to all faculty who did not already have it. Sure enough, they were squeezed out in less than a year, and had to look for new jobs while raising two young kids. It's one thing to deny tenure to teachers who don't do their jobs, but if this guy at Baylor was just universally denying tenure across the board, he should have been fired as fast as possible. Teachers need more compensation and more security for the future, or too many will look for another line of work - and the end results of that can be catastrophic to all of us.

Wow. Imagine having to work somewhere that your job is not assured no matter what. I kind of like the idea of people teaching my children knowing a little bit about how it feels to live in the real world. I am sorry about your sister and brother but I have worked hard all of my life ( and that is a long time) and I never know when I awake each morning if I will have a job at the end of the day. In order to maximize my chances, I work hard and do what I am told. If more of our educators had to realize what that life is like, we might all become better educated.

Oh, and by the way, did someone not explain to your relatives that education was not a high paying job before they accepted that line of work. I will agree that teachers are not highly compensated, but for the life of me, I can not understand why those choosing that line of work do not know that going in. The catastrophic results of which you speak might just be having teachers that are dedicated to their work regardless of the pay.

I suspect there is more to the firing than is reported. Baylor can conduct its business anyway it deems fit. If Baylor wants all tenure all the time they can hire the folks to make it happen. If they want no tenure all the time, they can hire the people to make that happen. If they are not getting the donations, grants and endowments to make it a rich university, then I doubt all the tenure in the world will save the presidents job.

I can think of at least one university president that I wish we had fired and it had nothing to do with tenure.
