Bizarre NFL/High School rule

Post by couch 'em »

Apparently not legal in college, but in the NFL/High School you can get a free field goal (or drop kick) attempt after a fair catch. This is done from a kickoff formation with the defense 10 yards back, minimum. Last tried in 2005, last successful in 1968.

You hear the NFL announcers talk about it every now and then and teams are aware in that you try and punt out of bounds at the end of a half/game when you are deep in your own territory so as not to give a fair catch opportunity.

Suprised it hasn't been used more, considering you can get a full running start like a kickoff and don't have to worry about a snap and placement.

Last one attempted was by the Titans in 2005 and last one to be successful was in 1968.

I hear the NFL guys talking about it all the time nearing halftime usually, but I have never seen it used. I am surprised to learn it is not applicable to college. I thought it was and have long wanted Morstead to take advantage of it with his strong leg.
