My philosophy has always sorta been "be realistic". I'm not wired for unwarranted optimism. Yet.

Man, I hope your football team looks past the Bobcats half as much as all of y'all are.
Last season, both our teams sucked, 1-11 and 4-7 are nothing for either of us to brag about. We played Baylor very close last season, even with our horrible defense. Middle of last season, we moved from a "Desert Swarm" Flex defense to a standard 4-3 and we won 3 of our last 5 games. We completely revamped our Defensive coaches (Three new coaches) this offseason also. 2 of these hires are old hands in the football world, probably around 80 years of coaching experience between the three of them.
Offensively, we return something like 98% of our production. Our main strength is our running game, as we have a stable of three capable starters. RS Freshmen Karrington Bush ran for over 1K last year and our go-to WR got over 1K yards also.
I'll be up there this Fall, looking forward to a good game.

Rice - Win
TX State - Win
TTech - Loss
TCU - Win (blowout)
Tulane - Win
UCF - Loss
Tulsa - Loss
Houston - Win
Navy - Win (surprise!...with a tricked out GEICO nametag)
Memphis - Win
UTEP - Win
Southern Miss - Win (surprise!)
9-3 overall 6-2 gets us 2nd in the West and a bowl.
Badda bing!
But I think this team grasps this offense by TCU, loses to better UCF & Tulsa teams, and then goes on a historic 5-game run with a set of large receivers who physically punish smaller cornerbacks.
The defense gets its stride by Houston.
I think SMU goes undefeated in conference and two losses in 2009, but loses the CUSA championship (nice bowl, though).
2010, SMU is one-loss (non-conference) until bowl, and is beaten in bowl.
2011, SMU is undefeated and plays in BCS bowl, at which time Jones announces his intent to remain at SMU for a contract extension of 5 years.
2012, SMU is asked to join the Big 12 South in a realignm...zzzzt.
Damn, the X-Box keeps turning off...need to take it into the computer store again.

WOW, you really think we'll have a 5 game winning streak to end the year? i think in the past 10 years the longest streak was 3, to end the 05 season

I have to say I like your style. I am going to go way out on a limb and call it 8-4 in the regular season. With losses against ttech, tcu, navy, and so. miss. I've been to a couple of practices and it just feels right. Anyway, its pre-season and if you cant be optimistic now, then I feel bad for you.

Yes, but you sucked in D-2.
Actually, we play in Division I - FCS. Your team plays in Division I - FBS.
Also, while our schedule doesn't really compare to yours, I'd say there was at least 3 teams we played last season that would have beaten SMU for sure, and two that I would flip a coin at. Now, I'm not trying to sart a flame war, so please only reasonable, decent people need to reply. Baylor, McNeese, and UCA (Central Ark.) would have beaten SMU if you would have played them last season...I'll throw that out there.
SHSU (Rhett Bomar anyone?), and Cal-Poly, I would flip a coin at.
My point is, I don't think your team is going to surprise us with any sort of size or strength or anything like that. We saw better teams than y'all last season. JJ will have to coach his butt off and y'all better hope that you have a very solid QB to lead your team. I think this TxSt team might surprise some of you. Whether or not, it translates over to the W-L columns I'm not sure, but I'm predicting a close game.

If you are looking for decent people, then you have come to the wrong place. While I admire your team spirit and I have had plenty of friends to graduate from SWT, it is a place for HS football players to go when no one else wants them. All the good Texas thugs go to A&M Kingsville.

First, I think you meant to say start and not sart. Second, as you said, you play in FCS, so there is NO WAY your team saw better teams than us. Maybe on television, but not on the field. Third, SMU's second team could probably go out and beat TxSt. on game day. Fourth, your team might surprise us if they put up more than 21 points. This game should be a good help to the psyche of our defense. Good day kind sir!

That's probably what Michigan and Rice thought about their FCS opponents last year. Both lost.....and you lost to Rice last year didn't you?
My point is you can never underestimate an opponent and those who do are often surprised.

Rudy T said it best, "never underestimate the heart of a champion" but i highly doubt most of those UM players even thought about that game against App St. And I wasnt fully serious about that second team thing...but I do think we win in a blow out and the second and third teamers get some plays in

08/29/08 at Rice * L- Shootout if JJ has the offense going
09/06/08 vs. Texas State W -Worst dropoff I've seen in a while
09/13/08 at Texas Tech L- Just overpowered
09/20/08 vs. TCU L- Hopefully home-field advantage keeps you in it
09/25/08 at Tulane * W -They looked awful when I saw them last
10/04/08 at UCF * L- Good team (anyone going? I might go with my dad, a UCF alum with all our family in Orlando)
10/11/08 vs. Tulsa * L - Impressive squad
10/18/08 vs. Houston * L - New OC will keep the offense rolling at Houston
10/25/08 at Navy W - Don't know much about Navy except they've probably got a pretty good fan base. Not sure if this would be an upset or not...
11/08/08 vs. Memphis W - Still think you should have won last year (AWFUL coaching)
11/15/08 at UTEP * L- Least consistent team in C-USA probably, but their fans keep them excited at home
11/29/08 vs. Southern Miss L - I think the outcome of this relies upon the attitudes of the players at the end of the year
