I have yet to see an airfare more appetizing on Southwest than on American...granted, when American's fares are higher, it's usually only by 10 or 15 $, well worth it when your getting your miles.

LUV is NOT a low-cost carrier anymore...

and sorry if trying not to lose more money than you already do is unpatriotic...

Are you suggesting they can't think of a better way to cut losses than to charge a soldier extra money to carry his bag to the war zone?

First, let me say that you are arguing with someone who gets upgraded and then trades first for coach seats with these guys, but a public company cant make everything free if it means going out of business. This argument runs along the same lines as "let's tax the oil companies because they make too much money. "

AA does plenty of nice things for them, and they certainly should be the first group to not have to pay the bag fees, but you can't have everything. I actually was pretty damn impressed last week when AA not only upgraded all soldiers on my flight, but introduced them individually by name as they boarded and led a standing ovation for each one.

actually yes lets tax the oil companies really really heavily...if your profits are cut you don't go bankrupt...you are still making profits!!! aka surplus aka extra $$$...no one in their right mind should argue they shouldn't be paying more especially when 68% of US corporations pay no taxes because the have exploited loopholes. Where do the oil company profits go? Into someone's pockets or into exploration and expansion of drilling?

I am not arguing with you, poster-formerly-known-as-firephil. I am expressing my opinion that it is a sorry thing for AA to do. The guy is going over to potentially give up his life in the service of our country. Let him tote his duffel for free for godsake.

having some trouble tracking down a solid number as there is a lot of literature about profits overshadowing their savings...i remember hearing statics on NPR that were staggering so i will get back to you on that.
