"the future is bright for the Southern Methodist Mustangs—and future years could look like the early '80s all over again."

I like.
It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!

Will Michael Jackson be black again? I think "Thriller" was the last time.

I believe the cover of "off the wall" was the last reported sighting of his nose as well.

I think it looks like the Polo Grounds. But SMU only played there once, in 1936. The text in the article says it's Doak, and the only remotely possible location during Doak's tenure might be Pitt (?) - not sure where Pitt played in the late 1940s. Given that the pic doesn't really look like Doak, and that it looks more '30s than 40's, I think it's more likely the text is wrong and that is somebody other than Doak (it actually looks like it might be number "37", which would make me think it's Doak's childhood hero Harry Shuford, except that I'm pretty sure he was a senior on the '35 Rose Bowl team and would not have played the next year at Polo Grounds against Fordham).

Thus ends the ancient history discussion, at least for me.

Okay, I had a 1936 rotunda so I checked this out....you're right Shuford was a senior that year. The problem is they wore leather then (according to the pictures). Those are plastic helmets in the picture...plus I'm not sure how many intergrated college teams there were in 1936.

Now, a quick google search brought up this

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/2005/10/17/gallery.footballbook/content.1.html

So this makes sense...this is actually a picture of Doak in Detroit, not at SMU but at the old Tiger Stadium.

Any takers on this theory? I had fun researching it at least.

I'm with you...if it is Doak, I'm guessing Pitt or Temple...where did Temple play? Franklin Field maybe?

Doak was 5'11...the guy in the picture looks shorter-either that or the defender is huge. At the same time, were schools like Temple and Pitt integrated at that time? One of the defenders would lead you to believe it would have to be an NFL picture either way, as the NFL had integration as early as 1920, and Halas on a bigger scale in the 30s.

I don't think Doak Walker was 5-11-sure looks like him. More like 5-9.
