I am shocked, SHOCKED   that no one mentioned Vic Viloria as one of those ties. Don't forget that Vic was originally from Louisiana and was also an assistant strength coach for LSU after having played at SMU for 4 years! His background has to significantly help recruiting that state.

Shocked that Viloria wasn't mentioned??? Lighten up Francis.

I'm sure Viloria had something to do with it, but the primary reason he committed to SMU is June Jones. Bobby Hebert thinks very highly of Jones from his days in Atlanta with him and often says that June Jones knows more about offense than enyone he has ever met. Hebert encouraged Fontana to look at SMU which he did and the kid visited the campus and really liked it.

Francis? Who is Francis, Wilbur? BTW I was being FACETIOUS, which might be too big of a word for you to understand. However, it does not hurt our recruiting to have Vic in the mix, IMO.

You guys need to quit referencing Bobby Hebert as one of the people involved in Fontana's recruiting. If this was UT, TAMU, OSU etc it wouldn't raise an eyebrow, but at schools such as SMU and TCU these things have a way of biting you in the arse.

Great get BTW!

What do the rules say? Bobby Hebert isn't an agent of SMU, he just knows Jones from a playing relationship in the NFL.

I think he is suggesting that only designated Coaches can be involved in actually recruiting a player. There is nothing wrong with a former player or acquaintance recommending a particular Coach to a player though especially if he is an acquaintance of the recruit and furthermore the former player is not a representative of the university

Right-its a common misconception but Eric Dickerson can't recruit for SMU or contact a recruit-he can only speak to a recruit in a "bump" situation. However, some schools hire guys like Earl Campbell making a potential bump more likely during a recruiting visit.

Actually, Earl is a paid employee of the AD's office and is listed as a recruiter for the school. Perfectly legal for Earl to recuit for UT.

Athletic personnel are not Coaches and can not be designated recruiters off campus. He can have contact with him on campus.
