Yes, if the .0001% chance that for some reason the Big 12 needs another team I would think Utah might very well be the target(if Arkansas wasn't interested). Then TCU or BYU. UH with about a brand new Stadium maybe. Again, where's the Big 12 quality football facility, BB Facility, baseball/softball facility? If this is the goal-where's the plan?

SEC

Postby Topper » Sun Aug 17, 2008 1:41 pm

I know you will all tell me that it is a crazy dream, but I remember even before the SWC broke up there had been rumors that some of the SEC schools were in favor of SMU and UofH entering the SEC. They wanted the Dallas and Houston tv markets, and they wanted the Texas recruiting advantages that come with playing in the prospect's home town. We have at least as much to offer as Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Miss State. I have no doubt that the local broadcast channels would heavily tout SEC football if a local team were in that league. It would be tougher competition than the Big 12, but wouldnt it be great for Arkansas to play a game in Dallas every couple of years? Wouldn't LSU love coming here on a regular basis? Maybe they would finally get an advantage over the Aggies in some of those nasty recruiting wars they seem to have.

Easy there, Topper. Until Stallion says it happened, it didn't happen.

SMU being in the SEC is the geographical equivalent of TCU being in the MWC. The Mustangs would be the furthest team to the WEST in the SEC (whereas TCU is the furthest team to the EAST in the MWC). Traveling to those games in the SEC would be interesting. :?

It would be well worth it for a top BCS conference, instead of a crummy MWC conference. We could expand Ford and still sell it out a couple times a year vs SEC teams, plus the bowl money!

Don't we need to have a couple of winning seasons, become a perennial top 25 mid-major,and win a few conference championships before any kind of discussion like this needs to take place?

I'm just saying SMU to SEC would be smarter than TCU to MWC. I don't think its gonna happen anytime soon.

SMU to SEC smarter then TCU to MWC? Thank you, oh master of the obvious.

Nobody seems to be able to answer why exactly the Big 12 would even want to expand. New teams would add nothing to their TV appeal - so the extra teams would only increase travel expense and shrink the economic piece of pie for each member.

The only thing about the article that Stallion posted that sounds like B.S. to me is the whole UT spin that they were the least bit concerned about academic reputation. They ended up with a much lower academic collection of schools. Their only concern was money, and they were brutally effective at fixing that issue. I hate them for it - but they did the job required of them to advance their program. The "outs" were left out on purpose because we were dead weight - only 2-4 were getting invited to the party - so silence until the deal got cut became the code.

SMU was aleep at the wheel - busy licking our wounds and misreading the direction of the NCAA (i.e. - an insulated Pye brought his Duke arrogance to the table and assumed university athletic departments cared about academic reputation and student athletes - that was a wrong assumption).

The whole thing hit us as we were at an institutional low point in leadership, politlical connections, sports performance and financial capablility.

I am sick of revisiting this - it is a big excuse that has been weilded for way too long. Lets stop dwelling in this archeology and move on. We have a bright future if we can make this last big move work. In my view there needs to be a ban on death penalty yaking on PF - it is a giant waste of time.

I still don't get why so many on here people think SMU owns the Dallas media market.

Me, neither. We all know it's owned by the BEVO Corporation.

Great point.....when SMU was ranked in the top 3 in the nation during the early 80s they could not sell out Texas Stadium

SEC Travel and TV Market

Postby Topper » Sun Aug 17, 2008 7:05 pm

We already travel to North Carolina, Florida and West Virginia, all more mileage than if we were in the SEC West. UTEP is a longer trip than LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss or Miss State.

No, we dont control the Dallas TV market, but if we became a winning program again the SEC ratings in DFW would go nowhere but up. I'm not a media guy, so I dont know how much money this would mean for the SEC, but if you combine a Houston team with us, I suspect it would be significant.
