The UTEP vs SMU example is pretty weak. "Top BCS" transfer Fred Rouse had one catch for 3 yards in that game, and Lorne Sam only scored 2 TD the rest of their 4-8 season. CUSA was hardly their plaything. I don't even think that Rouse or Sam were top 15 players in any CUSA category for 2007. Sure, I'm all for recruiting top DI-A transfers because that makes teams and the conference stronger; but lets blame that loss on what it was: a supreme example of how poor tackling and poor coaching adaptability. I don't think they ran more than 3 different offensive plays the entire second half.

Marcus Thomas had about 1200 rushing. Lorne Sam had over 928 yards passing and catching and over 1,000 in Total Offense(DESPITE missing UTEP's final two games). Sam was only a situational QB-as in when the situation is you've got an outstanding athlete playing against a defense composed of marginal athletes ie. SMU's 2007 Defense. Poor tackling my ass-Sam and Thomas just ran away from SMU's marginal athletes. Why don't you guys share your little theories with June Jones because he has and will continue to recruit these players just as Hawaii, Tulsa, TCU, UH, UTEP and most of the CUSA does. Matt Doherty also apparently disagrees too.

Justin Willis had 2944 yds passing and 699 yd rushing; Emmanuel Sanders had 889 yds receiving and 1100 total yards including rushing and punt returns; Zack Sledge had 729 yds receiving. So what is your point? We had a bad defense last year? We all know that. Everyone and not just Thomas and Lorne ran away from our defense.

Look, no one is saying that getting good transfers as well as Jucos and HS recruits isn't important, but Div 1A transfers are not an end all in themselves and don't necessarily lead to a championship.

UTEP last year lost 6 games including among others:

Tulane
Rice
New Mexico State

And before you say it, yes, we lost to everyone save NTSU (bless them). Obviously you can't win with a lousy defense.

PK's Original Statement;

"OK, (the following is a generalization) the reason most of these guys leave their BCS schools is probably because they are not getting any playing time. I would hardly classify them as "TOP" BCS transfers. That's not to say they weren't highly recruited players, but then why aren't they getting playing time?" -PK

No that wasn't your point. You insinuated BCS transfers suck. I made no comment about the kid other than post the story and list his vitals from Rivals. Schools win with these kids playing essential roles-go to bowls with these kids. Both kids gave UTEP an average 100 yards per game rushing and passing-both far better than any SMU player. SMU which hasn't been successful with BCS transfers in the past hasn't.

Actually you did make a comment about the kid...you labeled him a "Top" BCS transfer.

I said my statement was a generalization. I didn't insinuate anything...certainly not that anyone sucks...merely asked a question. I would classify a "Top" BCS transfer as someone who was a highly rated starter for a BCS school that decided to transfer such as Mustain from Arkansas. I'm not of the opinion that, although the player in question is from a BCS school, that he should be labeled a "Top" BCS transfer, he hadn't even played a down of football for the BCS team. Obviously our opinions differ.

That's OK.

Peace Brother.

If you're a former FSU top recruit and you look back on your 2007 highlight reel from a 4-8 season and see it clearly dominated by clips from Texas State and a 1-11 SMU team, should you feel proud? Again, Sam only scored points against TWO other teams in 2007. Even if he missed the final two games, he scored 4/5 of his points in two games against crummy teams. Again, I don't feel that transfers from bigger schools are a bad thing but I think the UTEP game is a lame example of your point. Here's the game again. I don't see BSC domination or out recruitment in these clips, I see basic football skill ineptitude on our end:

Then you are blind. You can not watch the defense in that YouTube video and not see that SMU was physically out-athleted by in particular Sam and Thomas. I was about to post the same video but it was so long I decided not to. The mere fact that UTEP relied so strongly on their gimmick zone-read offense moving Sam to QB shows that UTEP didn't think that SMU had anybody who could catch Sam. Its a gimmick designed to expose an athletic mismatch. In particular SMU's LBs and Safties as well as other DBs were exposed.

Did not see the game so can not comment on that but UTEP did fire most of their defensive staff after the season and retained the offensive staff you can read into that what you like. But they seem happy getting other schools retreads also Price gets most of his recruits out of Cali and jucos
appears to have a hard time recruiting local state talent. Getting back to the point the SMU defense was a real bad D last year just hope it does not carry over.

Here's how I see it.

Over the past 10 years, a typical UT / OU / A&M team would beat SMU by a score of 67-14 if both teams exclusively used their 1st string and played all-out the entire game.

UT / OU / A&M's second string team would have defeated our 1st string team by a score of 40-20, again assuming they both played all-out.

I also think their 3rd string would probably defeat our 1st string.

So in conclusion, yes, I would gladly accept most of their transfers, even though I do believe there is a correlation between those who transfer and their performance at their next school.

Look at SMU's own players who have transferred out. Most to lesser programs, many DII-A. I think the majority were not overly successful.

PK, I must say, this is a new and creative variation on "we didn't want him anyway" that you seem to have hit upon. Good job.

Thanks. I work hard at being creative...just like Stallion works hard at over stating things sometimes. :)

Another crazy thing is that both June and Doh would agree that stallion is the biggest [deleted] bag on the site.
