Borrowed recruiting information

Postby Pony4Life » Sun Jul 21, 2002 4:06 pm

The information was listed on the other site, where it was reportedly borrowed from Rivals.com:

-------------

Here is a list of players who have either made an unofficial visit to SMU or expressed an interest/or have gone to one of SMU's camps:

1) Donavan Woods -- 4 star -- (6-2, 185, 4.56) actually he didn't mention a camp or a visit but is quoted as saying 'SMU is really up there too...and I like what I could do up there'. He is insistent on playing QB others are recruiting for other positions. Leaning to Okie St because brother plays there. SMU has offered.

2) Aledo CB Broderick Newton (5-11, 165, 10.4) has jumped 23-feet-6-inches in the long jump. SMU has offered.

3) Allen offensive lineman Clint La Tray - 3-star - (6-3, 258) SMU has offered.

4) Allen offensive lineman Chad Smith - 3-star - (6-6, 280)

5) Dallas Skyline QB Arnel Rolfe (6-2,180, 4.67) stats need improvement

6) Shawnee QB Tanner Whitson (6-1,190, 4.5) Loves Dallas and campus

7) Shawnee RB Ricky Reed (6-0, 195, 4.53, 10.9 - 100 meters) SMU in Top 5

8) Dallas Carter FB Adrian Griffin (5-11, 230, 4.7)

9) Dallas Skyline WR/FS John Kimble (5-11,165, 4.59 - prior 4.45 before hamstring injury)

10) TE Allen Pollard 6-3, 260, 5.1 LSU, TCU, SMU, UT leading

11) Lockhart offensive lineman Matt Owens (6-5, 300, 5.2) good buddy at SMU (freshman WR Trey Griffin) tells him how great it is

12) Flower Mound Marcus OL/DL Caleb Peveto (6-4, 275, 5.0) .... Father Cal was all-SWC at A&M in 1978 and probably knows Bennett

13) Madison OL Howard Savell Madisonville (6-3, 267, 5.2) this info from a report on PonyFans.com (so they borrow info from us, too!)

14) DE Michael Borders (6-4, 230, 4.7) SMU, A&M favorites

15) Lance Luedeker (5-11, 225, 4.7) China Springs - 153 tackles .... based on size and the tackles, I'm guessing linebacker?)

16) Carrollton Newman Smith - Greg Thrasher Jr (5-9, 165, 4.45)

17) Azle DE/LB Aaron Shanor (6-1, 215)

18) A&M Consolidated K/P Zach Myatt - 40.2 punt average, 6 kicks inside 20. Consistent from 45 at SMU camp

19) Highland Park WR/Athlete Bill Foran (6-3, 207, 4.57)

20) DeSoto DT Cedric Cofer (6-4, 300, 5.0)

21) Dallas Skyline OL Kendrick Pride (6-3, 350, 5.3)

--------------

The other site also reports that SMU has not yet offered a scholarship to Dallas Skyline DL Steven Coleman. Is this really true? Anyone (Coach Rob, Recruiting Guru, PX, Corso, etc.) know why not? Does he not have grades?

There are some terrific players on that list, and several SMU has a legitimate shot at signing.

- Chad Smith is a monster, and he's only going to get better as he continues to grow into his frame. He looks like a prototypical Big 10 offensive line prospect. For those PonyFans in the Dallas area, Smith bears a striking resemblance to David Owen of St. Mark's, who signed with Purdue a couple of years ago. Owen went to Purdue and in two years has bulked his 6-6 frame up to over 300 pounds, and likely will add even more size and strength. Smith very well could do the same thing. His frame easily has room to carry 33-plus pounds.

- Arnel Rolfe is not the purest passer out there, and nobody is going to make the mistake of calling him a pure drop-back QB. But he is extremely athletic and fast, and very elusive. He makes a lot of defenders miss with head- and hip fakes. If he can't sharpen his throwing mechanics enough to play QB at the college level, some college coach is going to love all the options available in terms of how to get this guy on the field. He has the athletic ability to play WR, DB, or RB, and could play on special teams, either returning kicks or as a "flyer" coming off the edge to cover kicks.

- Tanner Whitson has exceptional speed and a strong, accurate arm. Very smart player who reads defenses very well. Can throw the hard "out" patterns, deep balls and can float touch passes over defenders. Very well-developed QB prospect.

- Ricky Reed will be a fine, if not great, college RB. Ideal blend of size, speed and power. Decent blocker and receiver out of the backfield.

- Adrian Griffin is a human wrecking ball. When he blocks, he looks like he's trying to plant someone in the ground, rather than steer them out of the way. Very underrated as a receiver.

- John Kimble could play on either side of the ball. Simply put, he is a football player. Very good speed and hands and footwork. Runs good routes, and reacts well on defense. He's a little thin - he has "redshirt" written all over him - but he'll be a capable, versatile college player.

- If SMU can sign Matt Owens, he would be a huge boost in shoring up the offensive line for the next few years. As mentioned above, he's a former teammate and remains a friend of SMU WR Trey Griffin. Owens is huge -- his frame evokes images of former SMU signee Tommy Miller -- and very strong. He has massive thighs and backside, making him overpowering on run blocking. He also has strong hands and long arms, meaning the potential is there for a solid pass blocker, as well. With proper coaching, this kid could be a star, with NFL potential.

- Cedric Cofer might be the hardest player on this list to sign .... a lot of the bigger programs want him. He's unbelievably quick for a guy in the 300-pound range, and uses his hands very well to shed blockers. Plays from the snap of the ball until after the whistle blows. Non-stop motor and footspeed allow him to chase down ball carriers from one sideline to the other. A little shorter than some coaches would like, but he always seems to be around the ball, and once he gets moving forward, he's very hard to move. Cofer is a prize recruit.

- Kendrick Pride is the kind of player who makes college coaches cautiously optimistic. If Pride can control his weight, every coach in the country will try to sign him. The size and power are there to be a devastating blocker, and he's learning from an exceptional HS coach in Que Brittain (an SMU alum). But Coach Bennett has gone on record repeatedly saying he doesn't want fat guys, preferring guys who can move. Pride can move as well as a player 100 pounds lighter, but stamina will be an issue until he gets control of his weight. He might continue growing, in which case his weight will not be overwhelming. Otherwise, he needs to shed 20-30 pounds. Expect several college coaches to take a flyer on Pride, because his potential is unlimited.

As of right now, there is a verbal offer on the table for Steven Coleman and possibly Travis Ferguson. The word at SMU is that they just want to see Coleman and Ferguson in person. As of right now they both will attend the SMU camp next Saturday, we'll see what happens.

What about offers for your other players, like Pride, Kimble, and I think I recall reading about an RB (Layton or something) and another few DBs. Are they getting offers from SMU?

Thanks Coach

Matt Owens is of course from our neck of the woods. I've seen him play a few times and he looked pretty solid on both sides of the ball. But he really seemed to be a good run-stopper at DT.

I haven't been able to interview him yet for our site. But I do have his pic and vitals (from his coach this spring) up on our site:

Do you know if college coaches are looking at him as a DT, too? Or are different schools recruiting him for both lines?

What do you think our chances are of landing him?

Out of that list, here's who I want to see in Red & Blue next year:

Donovan Woods
Broderick Newton
Chad Smith
Tanner Whitson
Adrian Griffin
John Kimble
Matt Owens
Michael Borders
Cedric Cofer
Kendrick Pride

And while we're at it, gimme Jasper OL Jorrie Adams, Dallas St. Mark's OL Kyle Thornton, Highland Park OL Ryan Gray, Brenham OL Wade Sisk, Winston OL/DL Tyler Brown, Skyline DT Steven Coleman, Skyline DT Travis Ferguson, Highland Park RB/athlete Colby Hollingsworth and Tyler (Lee) OL Bryan Turner.

That's not too much to ask, is it? That's 19 guys, plus Ricky Joe Meeks, which would leave us a few scholarships for WRs to replace Comet and Cardwell and Ford and Freeman. I think I should be a coach.

Sounds like a nice class you've put together there, Coach Fresh. Don't forget Nixon-Smiley DE Carl White (he can be found on FOX 7's website). He sounds like a monster.

FOX 7 - any idea where White is headed?

I wouldn't focus too much on Carl. I don't see him being a great match for SMU.

Adrian Griffin is very similar to Rock Cartwright, the Kansas State fullback the last few years (I think Cartwright's from the Houston area). They're both really short and extremely fast and powerful. They both have good hands coming out of the backfield and are extremely strong blockers.

Cartwright was drafted (late) by the Washington Redskins.

Anyone read anything lately on Cedric Cofer? Like who's offered him?
