Recruiting Targets

Postby No Quarter » Wed Sep 25, 2002 12:13 pm

If SMU has eighteen football scholarships to give, I think the right proportion is as follows:

Offense: NINE or TEN

OL.....4 - 5: Boren, Burley, Turner, Peveto
TE.....1
QB.....2: Meeks
RB.....1: Massey
WR.....1: Warren

Defense: SEVEN or EIGHT

(Previously two DE and one LB, changed
because Irema-Stansbury has been moved to
DE). Still hope we get some big DT!

DE.....1: Jones
DT.....2 - 3
LB.....2: Hall
DB.....2

Specialist: ONE

PK.....1

What say you? And if it becomes possible to sign JUCOs, how many would you take?

Not a bad breakdown, but we already have two kickers on scholarship in McMurtray and Stephenson. I say take that scholarship you have earmarked for a kicker and get another defensive end. We really need to build up both lines.

I wouldn't even mind seeing one of those DB 'ships go to another lineman. We have a lot of bodies in the secondary - let's see how many of them can play.

Someone on the other board says Bill Foran isn't considering SMU. Is that true?

I think SMU has to offer to Doak Walkers kicker grandson unless he is prepared to walk on, hence one specialist on my list above.

No Quarter, We need more than 1 LB as we lose 4 this year. It would also be nice to get a big FB/RB. I hope that there are more than 18 scholarships available. If we had 22, we could really use them. And yes, we need to sign a K. I dont think Stephenson is on scholarship.

Stephenson is on scholarship. They gave it to him right before the season started.

Mickey,

Of the senior linebackers I know that Viloria is a fifth year man. I wonder if a review of the past participation of the other three would reveal that one of them actually has another year of eligibility available...

Without wishing for anything to happen to a current player, I (like you) also hope that more than eighteen 'ships are available next year. So far as the linebackers are concerned, if all return, the online roster shows that SMU will have six scholarship players at the position: Seniors Bischoff & James, Junior DD Lee, Soph Ieremia-Stansberry, and RSF Carrington & Horton, and three apparent walk-ons: Burnett, Collins, & Pappas. With one more scholarship, I'd add a LB to take care of NEXT years seniors, Bischoff and James.

As it is though, I think we need the big linemen who can eventually stop the opposition from running the ball up our gut. And yes, I'd like to see another RB.
