Jones hasn't made a ton of comments about Bo Levi Mitchell, but the few things he has said seem to that tone where he might think BLM is a special player.

Did Jones seem this way with Chang?

The only thing JJ said in regards to Timmy Chang was "Damn, not another interception". j/k

JJ tends to use the names of pass NFL players to decribe certain simular styles of the way a recruit or current player plays. He may at times say a current player is better then _______<fill in the blank} from when he coached them in the NFL.

JJ has often been quoted using names such as Andre Rison, Jeff George, Ironhead Hayward, Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Tim Tebow (lol) etc. etc. to compare with. He at times mentioned that a certain player was better then a former player he coached in the NFL i.e. Devon Bess was better then Andre Rison etc etc etc...

If he hasn't compared any SMU player with a former NFL player yet, he will in time, just take it for what's it worth, which is nothing. According to JJ, Hawaii has the next Barry Sanders, Eric Dickerson and Dan Marino sitting on Hawaii's bench at this time.

The less JJ publicly says about anything, the better off SMU will be.

I think couch'em meant someone credible, not you warbow. Looking forward to seeing what Garret or some other credible Hawaii poster says.

He said Bo's arm strength, was a shade under Jim Kelly, and Warren Moon.

Again, I wouldn't get all caught up in arm strength. It is NOT a prerequisite to being a successful QB in the Run & Shoot... just as the West Coast Offense has proven, so-called weak-arm QB's can have great success.

Accuracy and consistency are the keys to the QB position in JJ's scheme. If Jones starts comparing Bo's accuracy to Jeff George or Colt Brennan, then you'll have something.

I think Warbow must know Jones very well-I heard most of the interviews on the net and radio and don't think Jones has had an interview at SMU in which he hasn't compared an SMU player to a NFL All-Pro player.

I think comparisons are fine..... I just don't want JJ to start comparing any of our QB's headbutting skills to Gus Frerotte. Not saying Gus ever played for JJ.... you know, I'm just saying.

Just my 2 cents:

1. Dr. Death is correct that accuracy is the key for JJ's system and JJ comparing arm strength of QBs isn't really that important for the success of the offense. From the reports I've read it does appear that Bo has a very strong arm...but decision making, accuracy, and consistency will determine his success, not arm strength.

2. Warbow was actually fairly restrained (for Warbow) in his post. It is correct that JJ compares his players to players in the NFL, as that is how he likes to describe players. It also has the additional benefit of motivating his players and gets them to think of the next level. Also, JJ's comparisons of his players to NFL players might have been a factor in Hawaii sending so many players to the NFL as draft picks or training camp tryouts--NFL GMs are told that "so-and-so" is similar to an NFL player that fits their system and they then take the player. That benefits JJ because players that are recruited are told about all of the players he coached that were drafted or signed as NFL free agents.

Of course, Warbow exaggerated how much JJ did it--I've tried to archive every quote about the Warriors that has been made, and I've read every article I could find over the past 10 years, and he's said stuff that I couldn't corroborate. But the facts are that JJ will *always* compare his players to those in the NFL, especially ones that JJ coached. SMU fans will get used to that and need to downplay a bit of what is being said...JJ (like all coaches) are typically optimistic about their recruits and players.

Hawaii's next Barry Sanders started in his freshmen year, shared playing time his Soph year, played almost one quarter a game his Jr. year. His senior year was funny, the astroturf had more tackles on him then the opponents. His head was so full of Barry Sanders type moves, he couldn't keep his feet and ended up triping on the turf many times.

Our Eric Dickerson is currently in a battle for the starting running back position with a former walk on.

Our Warren Moon set the NCAA interception record.

Out Dan Marino transfered long ago because of lack of playing time. He was playing behind Warren Moon and way down on the dept chart. I believe he left to Montana St. where he shared playing time with a walk-on there.

Our Andre Rison may just make the Miami Dolphins this year. Wish him luck.

Like I said, take it for what it's worth...Nothing!

Try this link for corroboration. http://starbulletin.com/2005/07/25/sports/story1.html

I counted about 6 NFL players names on it and it came of my very first search on June Jones +Andre Rison. It's kinda funny reading back on it. He didn't even mention Colt Brennan but had Graunke as our QB. The running backs he mention never playered a single down that year.

I fail to see a problem with this. Do you want us to say, yeah, that JJ is a sorry s.o.b or something? Garret brings great stuff all of the time, and I always enjoy his perspective, without an agenda.

Here's a nice article in regards to JJ's former QB's and how well they did.
