BLM against Rice- Picks vs TDsHow many interceptions in relation to number of TDs will BLM throw in the game against Rice. This is a spin-off of a poll suggested by someone in another thread.
I am going with 3 more passing TDs than INTs.
This line I once heard on Mike & Mike is playing in the back of my head. I hope it's not prophetic:
When you're asked about the interception you threw that was returned for a TD, it's never a good thing to have to respond with "which one?"
Justin Willis was eligible to ask that question last year.
Interceptions , fumbles or both?
They all hurt, didn't they?
The majority of voters think Bo will have at least a decent game. For the three voters that think he will have more INTs than TDs would you care to explain?
-I think that altough he's a frosh, he won the starting job meaning he is talented. -He has big-game experience in HS and shouldn't be THAT jittery. -The guy is going into about as friendly of a first game enviornment you can possibly imagine: 1. Playing against a terrible D 2a. Playing a school that has one of the worst home field advantages in college football 2b. Will play in front of a crowd that is on par with what he experienced in highschool 2c. The small homefield advantage will be mitigated by the proximity of SMU's Alum base (Houston/Dallas) to Rice 3. He has even played in the stadium on numerous occassions and won games there
Yes, he won the starting job, and as the General will point out, I am bias because I am a JW fan and believe he gives us the better chance to win.
With that said, in answer to the question of why BLM may have a rough game: I don't ever remember seeing Katy on national TV, Southlake yes, Katy no, so I think that will cause a few more jitters, not to mention it's against an equal opponent, and though I never played college football, I hear it's a bit faster and more complicated than high school so it takes a few games to adjust. Also, and people seem to overlook this, but Katy was a run first team, so teams played them to stop the run, not the pass. BLM averaged just 16 passes a game, and completed an average of 9. This will be one of the first times he experiences a true blitz, as well as facing zone coverage. I saw 2 Katy games, and both time the opponent played man-to-man, again with 8 in the box to stop the RUN. Thus, for those reasons, I think BLM will have an even TD/Int ratio or worse.
Really surprised you'd ask why some might think Mitchell will throw more interceptions than TDs. Follow freshman QBs much-most throw more Ints than TDs. Here's some:
Mike Ford 20 Ints 11 TDs Lance McIllhenny 10 Ints 7 TDs Mike Romo 18 Ints 14 TDs Todd Ritz 13 Ints 5 TDs Josh McCown 11 Ints 10 TDs Folks we are going to throw a lot of Interceptions in this offense with a freshman-its just a part of the offense. There is a reason Tim Chang leads the NCAA in Career Interceptions. I'd bet with as much as we throw the ball freshman will throw probably somewhere in the vicinity of 20-25 Ints. Of course, the best exception to that rule is an inaccurate, dead-armed QB named ------ ------(anybody?)
How about 2 Kids Ranked as No. 1 IN the United States playing for Nationally Ranked Teams
Matt Stafford 13 Ints 7 TDs 108 QB Ranking(91st) Mitch Mustain 9 Ints 10 TDs not in Top 110 in QB rating Jimmy Clausen 7 TDs 6 Ints. but a low 102 QB rating
Where have I said that Mitchell gives us the best chance to win? I think you and others have read between the lines. To clarify, I said Willis is the best quarterback on this team, but I do not think he is the best quarterback for this offense because of his freelancing with an offense that demands discipline. Also, look at the predictions thread I started and what I said about the QB position before Jones even put together the depth chart. I still believe that. I honestly think this is a throw away season because of the transition from one system to the other. I called Justin Willis arguably the most important player since our return from the death penalty. I love his competitiveness. But he's also a very maddening player. What I didn't like was his lack of leadership. I found it to be noticeable, and he didn't challenge his teammates to rally around him, IMO. He had an opportunity. Unfortunately, he's also had a hand in where he stands today.
I asked specifically about this game. Of course he will throw a great deal of INTs this season (as would any other QB we have on the roster) but for this game I anticipate him throwing more TDs than INTs. Fact: Rice was ranked dead last in the nation in pass D last year in terms of yards, yards per completion and yards per attempt. Fact: Rice had only 12 INTs in 12 games last season Fact: Rice gave up 37 TDs in 12 games last season BLM being a freshman in a new offense doesn't turn the Rice D into a force to be reckoned with. If we do not win this game, I do not think it will be because of QB play.
I swear chillin, between you and ozfan I would think you would rather BLM do terrible than really good. Would you rather SMU lose the game? Katy was on National TV for one game and Bo threw 4 td's and was player of the game. Any time a team stacked eight in the box, Bo picked them apart, making them adjust thier schemes and they did play against zone defenses. Don't forget JWill was 25/18 last year Td's to int.'s. That's 1 1/2 int's to every 2 TD's. What makes you think he would do that much better than Bo? JJ thinks different, thank god.
Why does everyone think that JW gives us the best chance to win? We aren't going to be running the same offense that we've run the last several years obviously so the players are going to have to change to fit the system better. I understand that JW was good in his role in our previous offense but JJ is changing things and we need a different style of QB to fit the system. Go SMU
