Never said I was not proud of my degree. Simply pointing out that a Rice degree holds a little more umph to it because of the school.

I didn't get a rejection from any school that I applied to, not even the Ivies that I applied to. But I'm at SMU. I know several others who had similar choices. Clearly, our university, while not on the same level as Rice, is doing something right.

That is a dumb comparison. That is like making fun of an All-Star baseball player for not being as good as A-Rod....

No, Rice isn't Harvard. According to US News, no other school is as good as Harvard. But Rice is possibly the best school in the South and definitely the top academic school in Texas. I love SMU and am proud of my alma mater, but I'm sure as hell not going to start dogging Rice for their academics...

i wouldnt go to harvard even if i got in, that is a terrible place to get an undergrad education if you want to be a same and healthy person later in life

That is one of most insanely idiotic thing I've ever heard. I hope you're joking. Harvard isn't for everyone, and I'm not saying everyone who gets in should go. But if you can put Harvard on your resume, you've instantly set yourself up for the rest of your life. Again, before I get flamed, I'm not saying that Harvard automatically creates a successful and smart person. I'm just saying that if you have the chance to go there for either undergrad or grad, you've put yourself in an unbelievably enviable position....Anyone who argues otherwise is just wrong.

Agreed with your sentiments about how Harvard is perceived in American society. However, if I were in a position to hire someone (which, as a student, I am not...), simply putting "Harvard," "Yale," or "Dartmouth" on a resume would not impress me. Show me what you did there. Show me that you took advantage of the wealth of opportunities afforded you.

I'm going to use myself as an example again: I knew that I would be best able to take advantage of the opportunities that SMU afforded me. Every school offers its own set of opportunities, and the best school for any student is the one that maximizes their ability to take advantage of said opportunities.

Look, I agree completely. I work with some people with Ivy degrees and others without them. I'd say the "other" crowd is just as smart and capable as the Ivy crowd. However, to say that it doesn't matter, or to say that one should actively avoid going there is just insane.

He didn't say "A Harvard degree is worth nothing". He said "I wouldn't go to Harvard", obviously based off of what he was looking for in the college experience.
