The DNC...

Postby ThadFilms » Wed Aug 27, 2008 12:05 am

.... yes this might get deleted immediately, but I wanted to just jump on and say, as someone who watches most nights of the DNC and RNC I was extremely please with the coverage tonight.

Granted everyone had strong opinions all around, but I enjoyed the speeches.... what was said.... what wasn't said.... and I truly loved the banter back and forth.

THAT is what makes this country great. We have the ability to disagee and disagree publicly. Just look at the Chinese Olympics for examples of the opposite (but it was a gorgeous spectacle to behold).

I hope that this post was not too politically motivated for it to warrant a deletion, I hope that we can keep it civil, as such. My only point to make was that I just loved hearing how great the night was for the Dems from the Dems, and how horrible it was for the Dems from the GOPs.

Though that's why I love about CNN's David Gergan. A republican who puts it into non-partisan perspective, and I will be looking to, his old partner in crime, PBS's Mark Shields, a Democrat, to do the same.

I miss the Gergan and Shields repartee of my youth. The two of them together really forged my political views.

I've never once claimed to be a Dem... and, really, more than my parents view... it was my parents love for watching the debates of Gergen and Shields that forged my political views. They were great together (but don't get me wrong, I love, love, love Brooks these days too... much better than Gigot) and really taught me too look at politics at not what was told to me, but what I really thought. I have absolute fundamental disagreements with both parties, but that doesn't mean I can't see the beauty in the campaigners or parties plans, I may be leftist to the extreme in somethings but in a lot of those things the Dems don't agree, and in fact in many of my views the Grand Old Partiers do. I just wish we didn't have a two party system.

But tonight I was proud of both. Yes, both leveled some low-ball shots (the pundits I mean), but I enjoyed the repartee (as I said before).

I only bring it up now because I don't really know if there is going to be such a lightning bolt kind of speaker at the RNC... that is unless McCain choses - and I hope this to not be insensitive, merely an observation - a woman running mate.

Because, then, truly that would be the make or break speech of this election cycle. I'd be glued to the tube for it!

BTW - before this gets deleted, Stallion feel free to tell me that PF.com is not my personal myspace. Apparently I never received the memo. ;)

(Seriously, I loved that frickin' response..... one of the best to any of my posts.)

Anyhow, yes, because even though I tried to stay central, just me putting this here.... yup it'll [this thread] likely be axed before, oh I'd say 3 PM tomorrow. (Hopefully not, but we'll see.)

So far you seem to have a monopoly on the posts for this thread.

For my two cents worth...voting for a President today seems to have degenerated to American Idol status. High school class president I can understand, but President of the United States...puleeeeze...this should not be a popularity contest or best looking for that matter. I'm not saying either candidate doesn't have what it takes, but from the information we are being fed who could tell?
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I won the junior high student council presidency, lot of great work I did. I have to say, about half way through I ceded power to the VP because we couldn't DO ANYTHING but decide the theme of specific dances.

I told them I wasn't coming in at 7 anymore to hear about what changes we couldn't make.

I must note I was one of the least popular people at my frickin' entire junior high..... by far.... I had, maybe, three friends. But I told a buddy that I could win the damned election if I put my mind to it, he laughed. That was that. The other candidate, who was a very good looking girl - I say this as I would have said as junior high dude, she was a good looking junior high girl - she ended up with only three votes.

Booyah.

Her younger brother even voted for me. I destroyed. It was such a powerful letdown that anything, anything, anything no matter how simple - everything I promised to fight for was off the table. They threatened to expel me in some early meetings.

Then I said, 'well, I'm done here anyway. I'll ride it out. You guys just do this without me. If ever, [which was never], the student council president had to make an appearance anywhere, I'll do it, but other than that'.... in one of the favorite moments of my life, I looked at the faculty and told them that I had been 'elected in a landslide margin and until we have any sort of say in this laugh of an elected body that I wouldn't participate in this, a kangaroo court'. I loved that moment.

-------------

I only bring that up because I made a point of running for student council president every year in high school. But I made it my point to have campaign promises so outlandish that they couldn't be taken seriously..... like doming the stadium.

I had a school admin admonish me for my campaign saying he thought I could win, I asked him, "why would I want to?" He said that he thought I might bring some positivity to the student council because I had, as he said, 'real ideals'. I asked him if he had been on his student council, he said yes.... I asked him if anything ever happened...... he only responded that I should run as myself. He and I were good friends, so I looked him in the eye, though laughing, I responded, well I really want Hagar Stadium domed.... I won't give up on it.

Okay, that last post was right up Stallion's 'ThadFilms personal myspace' alley. I almost deleted it.... but who cares.

Um, anybody want to count posts? Or maybe electoral votes? Heh.

BTW - Replying to my own post again.... such bad form....

But I wanted to say that I there is almost no chance he (McCain) takes a woman running mate, if he does, it could change the dynamic completely - BUT, really, if he doesn't throw us a true 'wild card', the best choice might be Mit Romney. Though, I did [heart] Huckabee. Not completely, but I loved his message.

But I think someone like Romney will help McCain.

I think the thing that hacks me off the most, as I still watch election (DNC) coverage is how much I used to like John McCain. How much I wanted him to beat Bush 8 years ago, and now how I feel so hurt by him. Really, he could do great things for this country and he has turned on everything that made me love him. (And I did.)

This all sucks because I love Obama, but the more I learn, the more I like.... but, why it sucks? Because my favorite issue he doesn't support.... space exploration... well, he does, but he's being conservative about it..... I really want everything to be thrown into it, because I think this is the answer to putting America back on top. I think that this 'trickles down' like no economics can. I think that putting a price on space means putting a price on education. I know for a fact that putting a price on the space race helped people I know today.

Maybe I shouldn't go into this, in respect of peoples privacy, but I will say only this, my father is one of a number I have met from his generation who was allowed to the grad school of his choosing on the government's dime.

I only bring this up, because pretty much 95% of my father's grad students at SMU have been foreign born, and I - honestly - have no problem with that, I have loved meeting and knowing each and every one of them. BUT, but, but! Why??? Why don't we have more specialist Ph.D candidates. Ph.D candidates who are born in this country! Why can't we do that? Why can't we focus on these things? Why can't - I know people might hate this - but, a full on initiative...... regardless of the end to the means. Yes, a Mars mission in the next 15 years is patently ridiculous.... but that "crazy' Kennedy plan of getting to the moon in ten years put the US soooo far ahead.... so, so, so far ahead.... just look at all of the companies totally made out of that initiative.

While, I'm an Obama guy, he - instead of preaching his normal stance of hope (which is why I loved him back in the day, and I still do) - he wants prudence. Which of course is great...... but damnit!!!! I know, I know that space initiatives can inspire all, and yes, my boy Obama, wants to try and put stuff into classrooms. But I don't think they should be mutably exclusive.

Does that make me a tax and spend idiot? Maybe. I don't think so.... I really don't... because I know many of the people who received 'Apollo' era government grants, etc. and those folks have made millions for the American economy. Made, not just millions of dollars, but made millions of jobs.

And, not only, making 'future' jobs - but current jobs.... AND giving us, Americans, who love goals (I hate to make a broad sweeping - maybe untrue - statement, but) we would be giving all of us something to look forward too. Something that we could look forward to, to be proud of as a nation. I think there's something to it.

But then again, I'm not the one to be elected.... I ceded power to my veep. I intentionally decided not to get elected to High School elections. Why?

Hopefully, and yes, I believe this..... I think that the Pres of America, while has the checks and balances, I think he/she has the powers that they need to have to, at least, install some sort of change.

I guess I'm done 'blogging' for the night. Sorry for this........ PonyPride, feel free to delete immediately.... but -

It was fun, and as I watch yet another news broadcast, I feel it's time for me to shut the f up. I just love the future of this country, and I don't think it's along party lines. I just enjoyed seeing all of this tonight.

Romney as a VP candidate would be a bore. But, hey, the Republican party lacks any kind of star power these days.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

The Republicans are probably toast. They deserve this for shifting from Republican views to Religious Right views. Now it is the Democrat's election to lose. Thanks, Religious Right, now we have to deal with a guy who's got the most liberal voting record in Congress, and runs his election with nothing but platitudes and no real info. Anyone who votes for someone simply because they use the words "hope" or "change" is a moron. But considering how most people in this country vote only on charisma I have lost faith in representative democracy.

The ironic thing is that as much as the Republicans love to rattle their sabres in the direction of the Mideast theocracy de jour for allowing religion to dictate policy, by kowtowing to the extreme evangelical right they are advocating a de facto theocracy for America. It's ridiculous.

My wife and I were talking about this the other night, and she's correct. We need to pass election laws where disclosing your religious preference or views is simply not allowed.

I am torn between Happy Hope Change Change and Mr. Republican for Republican's sake. The GOP has a number of tenets (low taxes, less regulation, strong national defense, etc.), but has completely forgotten what the basis for those tenets was. Party is a complete vacuum at the top. The dems are almost as bad; half don't know what they want at all and the leadership keeps proposing solutions to problems with the intent of solving different problems.

I assume Happy Hope Change Change will win, and really, if he doesn't, the democratic party ought to just fold up shop and let the Greens try; they have everything going for them this year. Still, I have absolute confidence that Obama will lead to to a GOP '94 redux.

I like that. Isn't it supposed to be separation of church and state? That's a good one.

Which part is utter nonsense? It better be the second part, because the first part is true.

And I am going to jail at the W tomorrow from 4-6. Stop by if you want.
