This sounds very familiar. Former QB Cavan benches Ramon Flannigan
SMU record offense leader in favor of some freshman prodigy recruit
that held great potential, and later played in the NFL.

Only after about 5 or 6 games of mistakes, inconsistency, and enough
wins to keep us in contention for a bowl game, did Cavan realize it was
serious, and we need the best QB in there. Ramon Flannigan.

We weren't a 1-11 team last year. It was the pressure from the MOB
BOSS that heads were to roll if we didn't go to a bowl game that bit the
team like a SNAKE.

Everyone knows in their heart if the players were having fun last year
we would've been at least 4 - 8, and probably at least 6-6 with out the
pressure of losing the coach that recruited them.

JJ, Hayden Fry tried to do the best he could for SMU's present season.
There were no building years for the future. That was what truly made
him a great coach. He designed, and improvised the O, and D to fit the
players he had that year.

JJ, you seem to be selling a SYSTEM that can't be changed somewhat to
fit the SEASON you happen to be IN :?: :!:

I can't speak for the other season ticket holders, but we will be giving this coach his five years to show us improvement before we would consider dropping the tickets due to performance. I would like to see us win three games this year, but if we only win one or even if we win none, we will be ordering tickets next year.

First of all, when Willis wasn't completing passes last year, his only option was to run or get his head knocked off due to poor OLine play(It wasn't a lack of trust in his OLine it was a reality as to how often they caved in).

We haven't seen Willis play in a game with this new system so we don't know how he would react.

As far as the game tonight, the turnovers were the biggest difference. There are very few teams if any who can win when they give the other team the football on their end of the field.

The dropped passes didn't help either and we need to sign some big time corners (JUCO's please) in the very near future.

I do think we will start to show some serious improvement toward the end of the year but this is definitely a rebuild year. Those of you who are all fired up about doing what JJ did in year one at UH, forget it.

JJ will succeed here but unfortunately it will not be this year.

Under Tom Rossley, our last run n shoot coach, he realized scrambling
running was Ramon Flannigan's great gift like Roger Staubach. He even
put in a QB draw play. Ramon is a record setter for SMU offense.

June Boy is sounding like a one trick pony who wants to retire in 5
years.

You have got to be kidding me. I've heard some great excuses for last year's performance, but this one is the best.

ya know bagice is right...he knows football more than June Jones.....we should of went with the 1-11 quarterback from last year that does not fit the offense at all that we will be running the next several years. i mean it's more important to lose by 10 than to lose by 29...ya know stick with the past longer instead of taking the steps for the future. i say we fire June Jones and Orsini since the Mob Boss caused the 1-11 last season and hire bagice!

I would have taken a bag of ice over our defensive coordinator last night.

calls were good, execution was piss-poor. 3 sure picks dropped. 2 deflected passes. Scheme put the players on D in situations to make big plays, and we know what happened. I would have thrown the bag of ice on Mason to cool him down. I think he needed it.

I was at the game last night. We were out played. We had no defense. We couldn't stop the draw, the option or the pass. Two of our TD's came from turnovers by Rice's in side their 40. We dropped to many passes: we had no run game; BLM paniced. He stopped reading the field and picked is receiver and never looked off the defense. Many times he had recivers open deep or on the opposite side of the field and never even looked in thir direction. TCU and TT will kill us not to mention the rest of Conference USA. I know nothing about Texas State but I would not be surprised to see us struggle. I was impressed with the OL they gave BLM time. He just didn't do the reads he was touted to do. I don't know if JW would have done any better but I sure didn't expect us to lose the way we did. I thought I was watching a rerun of last season.

I agree that the o-line looked surprisingly good. QB had pretty decent time to throw. I wouldn't want to be within 500 miles of Lubbock.

OK, so we know it could be an ugly season. How is that different than the majority of the last 20 years?

Jones has a 5 year contract to get this trainwreck turned around. It should have been obvious to anyone who was paying attention when the 2 deep was announced that Jones isn't overly concerned about whether this year's team wins 1 game or 5 games. He's going to see whether we have any young guys on this team who can play in his system and at this level.

Bennett was able to "build" a team that managed a single 6-6 season by his 5th year at SMU. I'm going to bet that Jones will accomplish that by his 3rd or 4th year and I don't think we will go 1-11 the following year.

I'm looking forward to seeing how much this team might improve as the season wears on, but I don't have much in the way of expectations for this season. I hope we can at least beat Texas State, but after watching how some of the 1st year coaches fared yesterday, I can't say that I necessarily expect SMU to win. Would love to see a "convincing" win to buffer what could be a tough couple of outings against TTech and TCU.

Bo threw more than 10 times a game. Looking at the stats he did only throw 13 passes in the game against Hastings last year, that they almost lost.

Bo did fine up until the 3rd. quarter. They'll get it straightened out.

One point on the OLine-just about all are a tad small or a tad light BUT they can MOVE their feet-which we have not always had-Rice ain't the best passing rush team but I think the OLine's mobility was the reason they were rather successful in protecting the QB. This group is one of the quickest OLines we've had in awhile.

Just my opinion. JJ has forgotten more offense since last season than I have known my entire life. I am willing to let him use his judgement and knowledge and expertise to develop the offense he feels will win.

Willis lost as many games for us in the past as he won. Just because he can scramble doesn't mean he is the chosen one. I am willing to let the Freshman learn. With luck, we will have several more years with JJ and success.

The O-line did look better than last year. There were some solid open field tackles. The corners played better than last year. We had two turnovers on special teams. Had our DBs been able to catch balls we could have had 3 interceptions.

We have a long week to prepare and JJ has won at a much higher level than we have been playing. I look forward to a good time on Vard and good fellowship with other Mustang fans. And I will wait and be patience while JJ develops this team.
