[OC Mustang]

Coach Jones is paid $2 million a year; for that amount, I think he should come off his insistence that the system be all to everything, and adjust more to his personnel.
I don't think that I am being anything other than reasonable as a fan by saying this or expecting this.
That said, I really have no more critique of Coach Jones. My criticisms of coaching in this game begin and end with that.

Good points:
Youri Yenga, Bryan McCann, Serge Elizee
Special Teams
Logan Turner (I'd like to see more of him, and I never thought I'd say that)
Bradley Haynes & generally good receiver play
O-line (haven't handicapped it for Rice's D-line, though)
Vertical game
Defense full speed, even if inconsistent

Bad points:
Interceptions caused by lack of stamina
Charlie horse hamstrings caused by dehydration and lack of stamina
Youthful inconsistency
Defense had tough time dealing with 40 vs. 25 second clock

"defense full speed?" are you serious? if that was full speed then we are in real trouble. our inside LBs are so slow....

"defense full speed?" are you serious? if that was full speed then we are in real trouble. our inside LBs are so slow....

I'm really talking about the corners...Bell layed some licks tonight, but got burned a couple of times. McCann is a stud; I wondered why Dillard was let loose and McCann didn't go with him. The defensive ends were full on too. Our LBs were less slow than they were dropping into coverage...but that surprised me a little. I thought the LBs would blitz a lot. They didn't.

I'm not sure why you said that you never thought you would want to see more of Logan Turner.

Admittedly, I only saw three practices over the last few weeks but each time Logan's arm looked the best. Although many will say that it was "mop up time", Logan's arm looked very live and he made excellent reads.

Bryan McCann is definitely a stud and I also think that special teams looked okay. I'm just a tad bit worried that Bo is just "JJ's guy" and that he won't give enough reps to the QB's behind him.

I've been cherry picking on this website and several times I read the practice notes, which usually stated that Logan looked the best in practice. Then - magically, he disapeared from the running. I trust JJ's talent evaluation because his record speaks for itself.

However, I also wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of Logan as I'm curious to see how he would react if given the chance.

Watching it on TV it struck me (as it does every year) how tiny our players are in stature compared to the Div1 players our opponent throws out there. GET SOME BIG FOOTBALL PLAYERS!!!

On the replay, that TD pass he threw was a wobbly duck. I think you can almost put anyone at QB and score with this offense. Once we sign and develop some more receivers it will be a lot of fun to watch.

Defense - SOS different year. LB's too slow. Poor tackling. Lack of discipline in staying in lanes. DB's got burned bady on jukes. Can't anyone hold onto an interception. Cramping and conditioning issues and size issues.

BLM - looked good early, but had a tendency to hang the ball up a bit. Strong arm early but after about 25 passes, they lost their zing. He's going to have to work up to 50 passes a game and June may want to rotate QB's so that BLM's arm is fresher in the 2nd half.

Rest of the offense:
O Line pass blocking was pretty good. Run blocking was horrid. Every time DM got the ball there were 3 and 4 blue jerseys to grab him. #24 is fast, but you can't let a pass go through your arms when you're wide open downfield. When there is a pick, no one seemed to be able to tackle. This isn't touch football. Take away that 21 points and this was a close game.

Special Teams:
What happened to TM? Almost missed the first PAT and then missed the second? Shanked several punts. Henderson did show flashes as the game wore on. But didn't seem to have any lanes to run in. Whether that was Rice's superior athleticism (I never thought I'd say that) or poor blocking, I couldn't tell.

All in all, we have a long way to go to reach mediocre. Clearly, this will be a rebuilding year.

Defense had real matchup problems. QB and huge receivers in particular.

Bo Levi was a deer in the headlights. Heaven help him vs. Tech.

We need some DB catching drills (or more).

Well I hope this will be a great teaching tool. There were certainly many opportunities to learn from our mistakes.

I liked Turner. At least he could check off his reads.

I'll get flack for this I know but...We have to start from where we are. Could blame it on youth, new offense, new coach, etc but gonna just say we missed some completions we should have had, missed some interceptions that we should have had and growing pains showed us up to be worse than it should have been....Reminds me of some of my boys' first games...but...the best is yet to come...believe me...Go Mustangs!!!

BLM's arm wore out by the second half. No running game. O line, see running game, pass blocking was ok.

Defense
POOR POOR tackleing. DB's look confused, especially safety's. Also D dropped three INT"S.

Special teams. need work.

ESPN mentioned SMU has the youngest 2 deep roster in D-1 football. I did not think we were that young. That said, we played like we were learning a new system and playing a lot of young kids. Alot of work ahead. I am a little concerned about the Tech game. The could easly hang 80 on us based on last night. I think we all expect a big improvement next week against Southwest Texas State, I can not call them Texas State.

I thought the uni's look great.

I agree with you OC, a good coach realizes the talent he has and makes adjustments to best use that talent, but JJ is being stubborn trying to prove his system. Ironically, he's going to make BLM a system QB at all costs, even though JJ put his foot in his mouth last year saying Tebow was a system QB, and Hawaii is going to pay for that dumb comment later today.
