I've got a bad feeling June Jones left his magic potion in Hawaii.
The Navy game was a matter of SMU not being prepared. We had no idea how to defend the option offense of PJ. It was as obvious as the nose on one's face that we were not prepared. We appeared prepared but overmatched tonight. We are young and we will make mistakes. Those mistakes make SMU look like the teams under Bennett and Caven. We sucked tonight but the season is not over and we have youth to improve. No major injuries and a ling week to prepare.
I agree. We were flat out coached at the Navy game. JJ wasn't out coached as much he is at the beginning of installing a brand new system with a very young team.
Simply put, we are redefining ourselves. The alternative is to win at all costs now and let history repeat itself with the same results we have "enjoyed" for the last 20 years.
This will not be painless, but it is necessary.

Willis lost as many games for us in the past as he won. Just because he can scramble doesn't mean he is the chosen one. I am willing to let the Freshman learn. With luck, we will have several more years with JJ and success.
The O-line did look better than last year. There were some solid open field tackles. The corners played better than last year. We had two turnovers on special teams. Had our DBs been able to catch balls we could have had 3 interceptions.
We have a long week to prepare and JJ has won at a much higher level than we have been playing. I look forward to a good time on Vard and good fellowship with other Mustang fans. And I will wait and be patience while JJ develops this team.
GOOD STUFF!

The O-line was a nice boost to morale. And going into the Texas State game BLM has had 53 chances to throw the ball in real game situations. By the time we get to Tech, he will have had 100+, and TCU, hopefully 150+. That means BLM will have read the defense for passing plays, and thrown the ball more than half the number of times JW did in his first season. We have to remember that sticking with one QB is a cornerstone of the "unconscious competence" mantra of JJ. He put in Turner to give the kid a break, but basically, until BLM finds that he cannot take the pressure (and we must pray that does not happen), BLM will take the snaps, and play the games. This is a good thing. Having an O-line that gives him time to practice making the reads and throws, is key to the learning curve.
There are people out on this board who obviously have no idea how to obtain excellence in anything.
How do you get to Carnegie Hall?
Practice, practice, practice!

I wanted to post something earlier but I am just now able to type after pulling my hamstring 3 times. Maybe it was cramps, but my wife was able to massage it & everything is ok for now.
I really think everything is going to be alright. The only thing I can think of that our young quarterback only needs to work on is tackling.
Prediction
SMU 49 Texas State 20

People, Jones lost his first game 62-7 to a USC team that went 6-6. Icebag, its a little disappointing that you've lost all hope after one game. And the way you put it, you've made an assumption that Phil Bennett could have won the game by putting Justin Willis. Really?? You are one of those SMU fans who are so sorry, I'm leaving this board. You coach the damn team you virtuoso.

Wow, I had forgotten that USC was so mediocre back then. Thanks for that little reminder.

I love how people are "sorry" for having confidence in the SMU Program's Poster Wonder Boy 12 months ago.
"Nobody has ever had 30 TDs in a Season-NOT Doak, NOT Meredith, NOT Dickerson, Not James."
Yeah we are "sorry". What's sorry is that Willis is a scapegoat for the next Wonder Boy and you are asking people to actually believe that Willis the 4th best QB on the team. I'm calling [deleted].

I don't understand the impatience. We overpaid dramatically for this coach specifically because we are deep in an abyss here and everyone knew it - not because we were a couple of gee-whiz run and shoot plays away from 9-3 in 2007-2008.
Keep trotting out Willis and you delay ultimate progress - he is a good player but he ceased being the key to success at SMU as of January 2008. Period.
You don't understand the impatience?!?! You were probably born about the time the NCAA hammered us, so you obviously don't understand the 22 years of agony alot of Mustang fans have had to endure. This was once a big-time program in a big-time conference. Now look at us.
I was getting impatient in the mid 90's! I'm sick and tired of losing 10 games a year while freakin' TCU is winning 9 bowl games in the last 10 years. We used to kick their butts on a regular basis.
I'm not prepared for a throw away season with 2 freshmen on the QB 2-deep, when you have a proven Junior QB who is the leader of this team, sitting on the bench with his helmet off. It makes me sick to my stomach.
So I guess now, we are just hoping to be competitive against TEXAS ST. God, what a joke.

I thought we would go 12-0 and meet USC for the BCS championship. Well I guess we can go 11-1 and still go to a bowl.
Let's fire JJ right now and go hire, Franchione. We can form the "Square of cluelessness" and pay off JJ.

The board really is pretty predictable - unbelievable, but predictable. They said the same things with Doherty.

You [deleted] are ridiculous. This whole ridiculous thread has focused on the QB and it would not have mattered. Our (what you would normally call defense) couldn't come close to stopping Rice.
You could have had Matthew Stafford or Tim Tebow in there and it wouldn't have mattered.......we still would have lost by double digits.
I don't hear too many talking about all the dropped passes and the "questionable" TD that was called back.
The average 10 passes in high school is relevant because BLM seemed to get tired as the game wore on. I didn't think he looked all tha bad until the second half and then he made some very poor throws. He is young and will get better as the season progresses.
If you are really concerned about us doing anything this year, then WTF is going on with the defense.
Its one game......some of you need to get a grip. I am far from a sunshiner, but I'm not ready to pile on a respected coach and a freshman after 1 freakin game.
