Any news on D-Tackle prospects

Postby SmuCommitt » Mon Dec 30, 2002 1:04 pm

I was wondering about any news on possible show of interest from any good D-linemen.

P.S. Talked to Gatewood, he says Bryan Turner is really trying to get him interested in SMU, right now Texas is his top choice but, he is still going to vist us mainly b/c of Meeks ans Turner. If we can get this kid we can attract more like him and have a better chance against some of the Big 12 opponents we play. Lets go get him!

Since it sounds like you know all these East Texas guys, what does Turner think our chances are of landing Gatewood? Do we have a legitimate chance, or is this a longshot that PonyFans are dreaming about?

That's a very good point about the DTs. We definitely need them to stuff the middle and get an inisde push. One of our major weaknesses last year was lack of a pass rush. Stansbury at DE haelped when he was given a chance. Cofer gets talked about more than anyone but we can't hang our hats on just one guy. He could easily wind up at some other school. Personally I like the idea of running the 3-4, since we have a lot of good LBs, but I haven't seen any talk about it.

And, since you asked, I hear Cedric Cofer really likes us. But he's going to wait until after he takes all his official visits, and he's got some big schools on his list (Colorady, Iowa, A&M). So he might be tough to get, because those are some good programs, especially Iowa. Sure hope he doesn't go play for Coach Fran in aggietown. If we lose him to Iowa or Colrado, so be it - but not Fran or the Frogs (who also are on his list).

There are a few other DTs interested in us. Brigham Rowe (6-3, 275) of Carrollton (Creekview) has had us on his list all season, along with Arkansas, Iowa, Wyoming, Mizzou and Baylor.

Coach Bennett also is trying to get Ben Mitchell (6-5, 275) from .... somewhere in Oklahoma, as well as another Oklahoma DT named (I think) Jared Naylor.

What are YOU hearing, SmuCommitt?

If we can get any or all of those guys then we can stick with the 4-3. If we can't recruit any DTs then why not go to the 3-4?
