FWST: TCU Bans Alcohol at Student Tailgate Parties

FORT WORTH — Some frogs apparently can’t drink.

After two years of sponsoring football tailgate parties for students, Texas Christian University has banned alcohol consumption at the campus events. The university previously allowed students 21 and older to drink beer at the pregame parties in the Worth Hills area.

But the difficulty preventing underage drinking and citations from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission prompted the ban, officials said. The parties have also been moved to the Commons, an open area behind the Brown-Lupton University Union.

Alumni events are not affected.

Fifty to 100 citations, mostly for underage drinking, were issued last football season at TCU, said Lt. Charlie Cloud of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. His office oversees a nine-county area.

"It was one of the higher locations we had last year," Cloud said. But he added that it was probably not unusual for a college.

Getting caught for underage drinking isn’t cheap. Violators face up to a $500 fine, Cloud said.

At Southern Methodist University in Dallas, by comparison, five to 10 citations are issued each game day, SMU spokesman Kent Best said. Beer and wine are served at pregame parties to those old enough to drink legally. The alcohol is poured in cups, and serving stops at kickoff, he said.

The comparison is notworthy in only one sense.

The fact that game-in and game-out, TCU fans show up.
SMU fans stay home.

Hopefully, that'll change. However, right now, the only reason TCU beats us on citations is due to numbers.

Stop enforcing the law unless someone is way out of line and you won't have as many citations..... Why are we confiscating more money from college students for what is essentially a harmless crime? It should be treated like speeding but going with the flow of traffic at tailgates.

That reminds me about the Sherwood police force. We have had more than one house burn down in Sherwood due to fireworks being misused. I was talking to the police department one occasion and asked why they did not do a better job of enforcing the law. They said that they were very diligent about cracking down on fireworks being set off illegally in the city limits, but they "relaxed" their enforcement on the 4th of July and New Years Eve. I just turned and left.

To an extent. They share some of our trouble with getting folks from the tailgates to the game. They also have a lot that show up, tailgate, go to the game briefly, then return to the tailgate. It isn't as large of a problem there, but it is still a problem for them.

We are exiles here during football season. We are invited to TCU tailgates every weekend by friends, but refuse to go even when SMU is out of town or off for the week. We don't want our kids to have any positive memories of that school. Awful, isn't it?

Hey, they actually mentioned SMU in an article. You have no idea how rare that is. The Startlegram usually pretends that SMU doesn't exist. One of several reasons that we cancelled our subscription.
