Annual SMU vs. TCU Game at the Cotton Bowl

Postby rooster » Thu Sep 11, 2008 11:28 am

With all the upgrades that have gone into the Cotton Bowl, its time to start talking potential games. I submit SMU vs. TCU in the Cotton Bowl. With the upgrades, tradition and pagentry that the Cotton Bowl affords, it would be awesome, from a fan perspective, to have 1 game a year in the Cotton Bowl, preferably against our arch rival.

Yea, we built a great stadium with the pre-game atmosphere of the Blvd. to play another game at the Cotton Bowl. I don't thinks so. Did you ever attend an SMU game at the Cotton Bowl in the 1990's?

Someone stole my idea from another thread!

As stated in the other thread, I think it would be a great idea and could work. The Cotton Bowl is the "House that Doak Built" for heck's sake and SMU has a bond and history with it. I do love Ford, but one game a year in the Cotton Bowl would be great.

I think it could work as long as it was during the State Fair, was always a blast going to SMU home games in the 90's during the Fair, its different than the blvd, but definitely a very fun time.

Corporate sponshorship is key as well, find some businesses willing to make it attractive to SMU and TCU to move the game on an annual basis.

We need to think outside the box, generate some buzz, I say we give it a shot if someone wants to try and make it happen.

Agreed.

Nothing against Ford...its a great stadium with a great atmosphere. But the Cotton Bowl is legendary.

absolutely ridiculous idea. I'm not against scheduling a unique, opportunity to play a ND or Texas or USC on a neutral field-but TCU? In a Stadium seating 92,000? If you are going to play a neutral field game against TCU why not in Jerry World where you would enhance the attendance being mid-way between the two schools. BTW I wouldn't favor that either unless a lucrative deal was involved.

But see you guys are thinking of the SMU connection there. If we're talking about this game being on a neutral site, then TCU would never do it.

Why would the Horned Frogs leave FW to come 35 miles to play a "neutral" site that has so much connection to us?

This is not a neutral setting.

Texas-OU works at the Cotton Bowl because prior to these schools playing the game there, they really didn't have a connection to it. Now, everybody associates the Red River shootout to those schools.

Exactly right
It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!

Never would happen. Like has been mentioned, its hardly a neutral site, a 6 minute drive from your campus. Also, its not 1950, where the whole city of Dallas or Fort Worth showed up to cheer the home team. Cowboys screwed that all up.

I'll be happy if we average 35K this year, and if we can drive that to about 38K in the next several years, I'll be ecstatic. We (both) just don't have the fans to fill up the Cotton Bowl. A better poll will be "Who will have the majority of fans in the stands at Gerry Ford next weekend, TCU or SMU?" I'm going to buy my tickets right now.

This year with the added season Ticketholders I think SMU may actually have more fans-I remember at least two occassions when that wasn't the case.

Parents weekend will bring in a few more. Would like to think a respectable showing (<25 pt. margin) in Lubbock might bring a decent crowd.

SMU-Texas, SMU-Arkansas or SMU-Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl and I'm in.

Why would TCU agree to that?
