GETTING DEFENSIVE with Allan Adami: Gap band

Postby PonyPride » Thu Sep 11, 2008 11:16 pm

The SMU defensive line faces a unique challenge this week in a Texas Tech offensive line that combines absurd physical size with a unique style that centers around a formation that includes huge splits between blockers. PonyFans.com's Allan Adami has been in the trenches against the Red Raiders' offensive line, and breaks down why the unusual formation is so effective in paving the way for Tech's explosive offense.

Not only did Allan Adami play the position, he also can explain it extremely well. Perhaps there's some coaching in his future?
Thanks, Allan!

a problem not mentioned is that the wide splits put the MLB on an Island where he is literrally the only secondary guy who can make a play on the RB. That little scat back Tauren Henderson Tech had a couple of years ago was almost impossible to stop on this type of isolated play if he got past the line. Huge mismatch athletically. Luckily Tech doesn't have that weapon any more but it does put a lot of responsibility on the MLB to stop the run.

Nice report, Allan.

I disagree that we won't touch Harrell. I don't think we'll beat him up or anything, but we're always significantly smaller than those monsters on their offensive line, and we've gotten some sacks in the past. We don't have a Justin Rogers, a defensive end with that enormous strength, but he and Cory Muse didn't have the burst of a Youri Yenga (and I think Taylor Thompson), either.

I don't know if we'll get there enough, but I believe our guys will get to him, at least a little. Of course, we need to get to him a lot.

Never said that we wouldn't touch him, only that it would be difficult. It's so nice to have critics...I mean fans again. :D

Hey, I'm siding with you - I think we WILL get to him... and hopefully knock the snot out of him.
And believe me, you've got a hell of a lot of fans. Used to be just for your play ... who knew you were a scribe, too? Love your report.

We might get a sack if we can get the guard to step on his foot again.

There's a stunner.

Don't worry. Nobody doubted who said it.

You're right not a stunner. SMU didn't get a sack against Tech last year either

I think we were credited with one when the guard stepped on his foot and he fell down. I do not know who was credited but we got one.

(Or that might have been 2 years ago)
