History Channelis showing some unbelievable footage of 9/11. It is still hard to believe that actually happened.
I remember watching CNN all that morning. And after both towers fell, there was one moment when the clouds of smoke formed a smiling skull over the entire area. It was there only two to three seconds, and then it was gone. I have never seen a photo of that since and wish I'd have had a camera to take that picture. Several hours later, and it may have even been the next day, after all the smoke had cleared, there was a shot of beams of steel that had fallen and had impaled themselves into the ground, and they were all in the shapes of crosses, much like the three crosses at Golgotha. Over the next weeks, I kept thinking about the contrast between the skull formed by the clouds of the falling debris, which was so transient, and the crosses that were formed by the falling steel and how they remained in place during the entire recovery effort. That contrast gave me hope in that the evil that caused the event was short lived, but the good and the hope that were there that day and the days after far outlasted that brief, but deadly, moment.

I work about 5 miles from the Pentagon. You could smell the burning jet fuel and building materials in Alexandria where I work and obviously see the thick black smoke. It was a tense day until we were sure all flights had been grounded. No one was sure what was going on with Flight 93 since its transponder had been turned off as well and the news folks were saying that a plane was still unaccounted for. The two rumors were the Sears Tower in Chicago and the White House. And we all thought the John Grisham novel about a plane hitting the Capitol building was far fetched.

Which easily explains why we thought Grisham was far fetched. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
It was through the looking glass. Marines locked down Camp Pendleton and flew gunships in a figure-eight over San Onofre Nuke Power Station. They parked a destroyer off of San Onofre too. Orange County's Sheriffs Department has always been a little paramilitary; they went ape. And I will never forget seeing loaded F-16s doing touch and goes at John Wayne airport.
The weirdest thing...no airplanes. Not a one over Orange County or LA...for a week. Was rather peaceful, actually. But weird. Not the same as DC and NYC...but changed everything nonetheless. "Moderation in all things, and especially in Absoluts [vodka]." The Benediction, Doc Breeden, circa 1992
The catch was actually by Jtstang but we are often confused due to our seating arrangements. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
The clear skies were eerie. Nothing but stars and an occasional overflight from Los Al Naval Air F18s lighting their afterburners over my home as they cleared the coast. The 102 Minutes production was extremely disturbing. I was looking to see anyone who was not in shock. We as a nation were totally unprepared for anything like this tragedy. The command structure had totally melted down and, except for a few brave individuals who brought people out, 9/11 could have been so much worse. I pray that we truly "Never Forget" and that we capture the miserable people responsible for this and their previous acts of war on all of us. I hope Texas is spared from what looks like a horrible hurricane and my thoughts and prayers are with all of you there. SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

I grew up in the NYC suburbs (Westchester County what what?) and actually saw the dust/smoke rising in the air from a friends house on the Long Island Sound. Pretty surreal. My dad was working in manhattan at the time, but was with my mom on a trip to Pebble Beach, CA. According to his co-workers, the first plane flew right by their building and it shook pretty hard (he used to work in the Met-Life building above Grand Central Station). They had a pretty good view of downtown. What a day.
On that day, everyone at the office was naturally watched the little tv in the lunch room or was on the internet trying to get updates about what happened. At some point that morning, our office administrator sent an email to everyone expressing that while a terrible tragedy happened to our country, we still had clients to serve and that we should focus our efforts in that direction.
Oh yeah, and if you remember, several companies in the big buildings in downtown Dallas allowed employees to go home for fear that a similar attack would occur here. I will always remember the images of people jumping from the towers. It still puts a knot in my stomach thinking about those images. What hell must have been going on inside the building to think that jumping to one's death was a better alternative. I also remember the FAA national radar showing the grounding of planes across the country. May the good Lord bless this country and provide comfort and peace to our good men and women who lost their lives, or knew someone who was lost, that terrible day. /No Hate. Just Facts.
