SMU loses assistant coach

I just posted a press release on the football message board that announces the resignation of offensive line coach Bob Stanley to assume the same position at Kansas State.

Stanley was the best coach on the staff. There are only negatives with this. The loss of Giles and Stanley will not only hurt recruiting from the number of recruiters standpoint but also from a quality standpoint. What DE or OL would sign with SMU if they don't even know their position coach? This is NOT GOOD!

I'm sorry to see Coach Stanley go, because he's a really nice guy and a good coach. I wish him nothing but the best.

Any candidates being thrown around as replacements for him or Giles?

Fellas, we'll be fine. Coach Bennett has put together a terrific class, and he'll continue to do so. This is a staff that recruits extremely well, and whoever replaces Coach Stanley and Coach Giles will be hired in part with their recruiting ability in mind.

Why have we lost 2 assistants? Stanley was a good coach...so Bennett can't possibly be housecleaning.

Stanley had a chance to go home to go home and to go to a top 10 program. It's not a sign of a lack of loyalty to Coach Bennett. It's a good career move, and shouldn't be taken as anything more.

Besides, Houston and Kansas State each pay better than SMU. I've heard Coach Giles got a raise of 20-30%, and I bet Coach Stanley got a bigger one. Good for him.

Remember to root for him when UT's defense full of All-American candidates gets nowhere near K-State's QB.

With as many coaching changes and consequential assemblages of new coaching staffs this year, the move of any assistant coach to another job which he (for more than likely reasons) feels is an improvement in his situation shouldn't be questioned - especially in our current economic atmosphere. There have been more than the usual head coach changes this year and the changes also bring about moves among assistants. It's that simple. Coach Giles was a loss. But for whatever reasons he wanted to get closer to home (Palacious) which is closer to Houston than Dallas. He's a young, single guy and he may have been homesick. The opportunity to move to U of H may have been a dream to him. As far as the loss of Coach Stanley is concerned, it's the classic result of the "ripple effect". Baylor hired Kentuckey's head coach and Kentuckey replaced the head coach. He's now hiring his staff of assistants and in the course of doing so hired two of Bill Snyder's top assistants at K-State thereby causing "disaster control" to go into effect at K-State, and Coach Stanley leaves SMU to return to a better job at K-State (he was a grad-assistant when he left there to come to SMU). <A HREF="http://kstatesports.ocsn.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/011003aaa.html" TARGET=_blank>http://kstatesports.ocsn.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/011003aaa.html</A>

Consider it as an indication of how well Coach Bennett has done in picking his assistants. That's the best possible indicator IMHO of how good a head coach really is. We "wisely" fired a head coach who left us to run up a good record at NTSU and then left there to go turn around a dismal program at the University of Iowa. Some of his assistants who got hired away include the current head coaches at OU, Wisconsin, Iowa State, and Iowa. And, there are quite a number of his other former assistants who are now coordinators at major football programs. What better evidence can there be to demonstrate how good a college head coach is? If Coach Bennett's assistant's move on to better jobs, and become head coaches or coordinators, then that speaks volumes about how well Coach Bennett is at sellecting his assistants who are the people who will be coaching all of the young men he recruits. If Coach Bennett has damn good assistants/position coaches, then it becomes that much easier for him to recruit damn good players to come to SMU. Ergo, don't be worried that Coach Giles and Coach Stanley left, (though I will miss both of them also because both of them are very good coaches and recruiters and good guys to boot), because the fact that both of them moved so quickly and caught on with good programs with new coaches speaks well both of them and the SMU Football Program. The ultimate best sign of a good college head football coach is the number of his former assistants who have moved on to become head coaches themselves. So, I hate to see Coach Stanley leave us at this time, but it can be used as a positive recruiting tool by our remaining coaching staff to demonstrate to the "prospects" that SMU is on the rise. I know that Coach Bennett has already assembled a short list of very good potential replacements for both of the openings. Whoever are selected will be good coaches (and, as another poster noted, very good TEXAS recruiters). NOT TO WORRY.

P.S. Don't worry about our visits this weekend. There are some here who aren't supposed to be and others who aren't here who are erroneously reportedly to be. And don't ask me to elaborate. If we get the the good ones, y'all will be very happy. As a certain coach said to me as I was talking to him about our number of remaining possible 'ships and the guys who we really are serious about, "This is kind of neat a position to be in - huh?" Don't fret guys - we've got some very good prospects in this weekend, and also have some others lined up for next weekend (if we still need them). Don't believe what you read in the newspapers. Our coaches may not have a clue where the report is coming from or why. I won't ever use names (and I wish the rest of you would adopt a similar policy since both players and their families as well as prospects and their families and friends read this Board). As an example, a certain prospect suddenly appeared out of nowhere (except on Rivals), as a prospect who we had offered to and to whom he had committed to U of Minn. but is still interested in us and is still supposedly visiting this weekend. The coaches have no clue where this came from. The prospect in question is not visiting us this weekend and we have not offered him a 'ship. I suspect that he has used Rivals as a tool to try to generate interest where it doesn't exist. Scratch his name off of your lists and wait to see who we're really interested in. We're going to have a damn good recruiting class this year. There may be some "commits" here this weekend on unofficial visits helping to recruit the guys who are here on official visits who have not yet committed. And they might be guys who have erroneously been reported to be looking at other schools - when they really aren't.

....a name to remember who might be considered is UT Offensive Line Coach Tim Nunez who has worked at UT, A&M, Marshall and Tulane. He was just moved in to an administrative position at UT but says he is looking at other opportunities. He was at A&M in the early 1980s and might have some connections with Bennett. Solid experience recruiting Texas.

BTW to show you what some of the Big 12 schools do to have a BIG advantage over SMU in attracting and retaining assistants-consider this. UT sets up an annuity that pays each assistant $250,000 if they stay at UT for 5 years. Nunez reached that 5 year mark at the conclusion of this football season at UT and is eligible for the annuity. So if that info is correct he could come to SMU with a big hunk of change in his pocket. The gap between the haves and have nots continue to grow in College FB-but that just might work in SMU's favor this time since he should be financially stable even if he moves into a lower paying position at SMU.
