SMU's First 2004 Prospect

Postby Stallion » Sat Jan 11, 2003 2:04 pm

.....Recruiting is a year round sport these days and the first 2004 prospect to list SMU is A Jeremy Wilburn 5-11,177 4.51 from Shreveport Louisiana Byrd who favors LSU, A&M and SMU. That brings up an interesting point. SMU made the decision which has borne fruit to concentrate on Oklahoma this year because of the tremendous ties some of our coaches have in Big 12 Country. Cavan and his coaching staff had SEC ties so Lousiana was a more natural fit. We have had ZERO presence in Louisiana this year as a result. I'm not questioning the coaches because it has proved successful but I would hope we didn't have to totally write off Louisiana completely in the future especially with a WAC presence in the state. Also, I think Bennett was Defensive Coordinator at LSU a few years back wasn't he? Lousiana may produce as many Division 1 prospects as any in the country per capita and there really are only two traditional Division 1 schools LSU and Tulane. Wonder if those East Texas connections could be expanded a bit at least into the Shrevport/Northwest parts of the State.
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Yes, Coach Bennett used to coach at LSU. And Louisiana is as fertile a spawning ground for football players as any state in the country after Florida, California and perhaps Texas and Pennsylvania. And it only trails because of population numbers, not because of the caliber of athletes in the state. When Coach Bennett was hired, he said his recruiting effort was going to be centered around a 300-mile radius from Dallas - I'd say there are a load of talented Louisiana players who fall within that circumference.

Does the "A" stand for "Athlete"?

What position(s) does he play in high school? Got any stats on the guy?
