Turnovers

How many truly felt we would be 4-0 by this time in the season? Truth is, most of us expected to be 1-3 or possibly 2-2.

What has killed any prospects of a competitive game this season has been turnovers. Turnovers killed us against Rice. Eliminate turnovers and we have a chance in that game. TTU and TCU would be more competitive if we didn't turnover the ball (and allowed two for TDs) in the first few possessions.

The facts are the most consistent aspect of SMU football starting with Caven and continuing to today is turnovers. Game after game we have significant turnover issues. Eliminate turnovers and we may not be as bad as we are. We may not be any better but we sure improve our chances to win.

The key for JJ and his offense is to eliminate turnovers. Just give us a chance to punt and let the other team march long distances to score. TCU and TTU may have good enough talent to do just that but other CUSA teams will find consistently marching long distances to score is difficult.

Had we eliminate turnovers this season we may not have changed our record. But we would feel that our team is making important improvements in a key aspect of the game. We want to see improvement and with our same tradition of turnovers as we have had, we can't possibly measure where we have improved and where we may have some opportunities to turn things around.

Good points all, I would add the other side of that, which is that our D, while clearly physically outmatched, is not taking what is being given to them. Missed opportunities abound. Mostly in the form of dropped int's. Bell had a great jump on the ball in the end zone in the 1st, could've been six the other way and a 7-7 game. (he later made up for it with I thought a spectacular open field play on Aaron Brown, which the announcers didn't seem to even notice, that really was a helluva play) Castro dropped another pick. Anyway, I counted at least 3 times last night where the ball was handed to us on a platter and we politely declined. Not going to win too many games that way
