We all want to point a finger, but there's no need to dogpile Coach Bennett. He wasn't recruiting for the systems Coach Jones and his staff are using. Let the guys learn from their new coaches and have the roster supplemented by players recruited for these schemes.

Bennett was awful. Period. The defense was the main reason he got fired and he was supposed to be a defensive specialist. He was clueless on the offensive side of the ball which is evident in him switching offensive coordinators for poor performance. He won no games one season, and one in his last. His team quit on him last year and there was no progress or hope for the program. People simply quit going to games it was so bad.

so who's going to be the first to post the obligatory "but he was such a nice guy!" post?

bennett wasn't recruiting players for JJ's system but i think "people who can play defense" isn't a strange requirement for this system.

Bennett did not select BLM as his starting QB this season. Come-on to blame him for this is absurd.

I give Bennett credit for his lame D. We did not know how low our talent really was.
Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!!

The qb is not the only reason the team has lost to a vetran Rice team on the road and to a top 10 team on the road and a top 25 team at home. We had a different qb last year and won 1 game. The team is too young (due to poor player retention, poor recruiting, and restrictive policies that does not make it realistic to get juco and transfers). This program was a joke for over 20 years because the administration had too many restrictions on the program and did not hire the best available coaches. There is a stench on the SMU football program that will take time to get rid of. Hiring a proven D-1 A winning coach that has had success in the nfl and usfl is a big start. Loosening the recruiting restrictions and aggressivley going after juco players and accepting transfers is another big step. We have been told the restrictions are loosened to allow the coaches more freedom in recruiting. Do you think JJ would have come here if those things were not addressed? SMU football is the talk of the town and we have received more national press since JJ was hired since the death penalty. Things are on the up and this program will get back to respectability and start winning.

I do not blame PB for his offensive recruits because we did not run the run n shoot while he was here because honestly while he was here our offense wasnt that much of a problem. I blame him for turning our defense into a disgrace that cannot tackle even if that was the only thing they were told to do. Most importantly he left us with absolutley no talent especially on that side of the ball. With the exception of serge and maybe handy the rest of our d-line would be playing linebacker if they were at any other school. I knew his reign at head coach would go nothing but downhill after he made the switch to the blue helmets.

Blaming this on past personnel doesn't improve our chances of turning it around. We are all aware of the multitude of mistakes made at all levels through the years that have kept SMU football in the Bottom 10. Pointing fingers hasn't improved our record in the past and it won’t now. Unfortunately, we fans have little influence on the end product. Thus, we are stuck with moaning and groaning about our woes.

Yes, it is like a good enema to blame all woes on the past. But unlike an enema, once we blow off the blame game steam, we are still stuck with crap for a team.

Hopeful, Orsini and JJ have a plan to change our future by recruiting and coaching talented players. That will change things more than all the board whining (without cheese at that) that we all put out week in and week out.

Hell, I blame Copeland for the $1mm bonus that handcuffed Orsini in 2006.

I blame increased solar activity for the slight warming trend from 1980 to 2007 we experienced.

I blame Obama for not writing or passing ANY laws that could have affected Fannie/Freddie, while taking $300k in campaign contributions by F/F and THEN hiring the CEO of F/F to be his Econ advisor.

But I don't blame JJ.

I blame Bush for the Iraq mess and a recession-like economy. I blame SMU for crappy football for 20 plus years. I blame Copeland for being a crappy ad and I blame the Board of Directors, Pye, and Turner for a keeping Copeland around and implementing and enforcing non-competitive athletic policies. I blame Rice, Texas Tech, and TCU for beating SMU in football because they have made better choices with their atheltic programs over 20 years than SMU.

Blame clinton for not killing Osama when he could have, or bombing Saddam 5 years earlier when he was lofting 100s of missiles into Iraq - bad aim.

bottom line: this pathetic defense we have, excluding a couple promising athletes, was put together by an underachieving recruiting attitude that has last year and will probably plague us the next couple years. i've said it again and again, this defense does not have a chance in hell of stopping any offense we face.

i know its been briefly discussed before, but why isn't devon bailey on the frickin field? he is our only legitimate looking safety on this team and he's warming the f'in bench?

I disagree that the team quit on PB last year.
It tastes better when served from a Bowl (game)!
