This Kid Appears to Have Learned Standing Next to CoachDavid Johnson- 4 year benchsitter-and yet he's got to be at the Top of Passing Charts in the NCAA. Scary thought Tulsa almost had 3 players get more than 100 yards recieving(the 3rd guy got 98)-and the two top Receivers didn't even contribute to last years National Leading Offense. Slick Shelly is a Tennessee transfer. The Damaris Johnson kid has come out of nowhere to give the best receiver corp even more depth. Johnson had 3 tackles too. Does he go both ways. What 's his story?
Tulsa beats New Mexico 56-14 David Johnson threw for 469 yards and six touchdowns as Tulsa christened its newly remodeled H.A. Chapman Stadium with a 56-14 victory over New Mexico Saturday. Johnson, who entered the game as the nation's leader in pass efficiency, completed 24 of 39 passes in a performance marred only by two interceptions. Receivers Slick Shelley and Damaris Johnson each had two touchdown catches and exceeded 100 yards receiving. Tulsa finished with 606 yards total offense against a defense that had been allowing just 305 per game. Tulsa's defense chipped in as well, as Roy Roberts returned an interception 41 yards for a score as Tulsa (3-0) limited New Mexico (1-3) to 316 yards of offense.
Due to JJ's ego, he totally screwed up a perfect situation for BLM. He should have been redshirted, sit and learn for 2 years watching JWill, and then come in as a Sophmore and play for 3 years.
Not sure that is true? But JJ should surround BLM with the best athlets possible. We are better than what we are playing...................
David Johnson 4 year benchwarmer was 18-22 and about 286 yards and 4 TDs. Had a bad day since UCA was playing two deep safeties so Tulsa just ran the ball all day. He has the highest passing efficiency rating I've ever seen at 227.22 and has 19 TDs and 4 Ints in 4 games. BUT you can't learn anything sitting on the sidelines next to the Coach.
On the other hand...perhaps he should have been starting those four years instead of warming the bench. We/they will never know. Just a thought.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Yeah, but you can learn a ton by following the advice of a bunch of pencil necks posting on a website who have never coached a day in their life.
Sorry, I agree with Stallion on this one. I am still wondering how we would be worse off with Willis in this year. Our offense is not scoring more than it did with Willis, is not converting more short yardage situations, and it is not less turnover prone. Lots of QBs have learned an offensive system as backups. And if BLM is truly our QB of the future and his current supporting cast is truly that atrocious, then we would have been better off redshirting him and having an experienced QB start this wasted year rather than throwing BLM to the wolves now and wasting a year of his eligibility.
I honestly believed that the difference between last year's 1-10 record and at least a 500 record was the coaching in close games. I thought with a more competent coaching staff and essentially the same offensive personnel, we'd win some of those close ones. What is most disappointing about this year so far is that we haven't even been able to get to a close game to find out.
In my opinion, JW is runner. If he does not see an open receiver or his second option, he runs. And he has success and does it well.
But this is not what the philosophy of the Run and Shoot is about. JJ being the pioneer of this offense is not about to modify it into a hybrid type just to accomodate JW style of play. This why he went with BLM, a pocket style QB. With the caliber of players we currently have and the fact we are starting the most freshman that any team in Division 1A, I honestly was not expecting to have a winning season. I would have been thrilled to go 0.500 actually. Before the season started, the only player I wanted JJ to keep was Morested. Other than him, he could have butchered the entire for all I care. JJ has brought a proven a successful system to the Hilltop but it takes time for players to learn and to recruit the necessary talent that appeals to the system. But I am extremely confident that we will be competitive in a couple of seasons.
The Tulsa offense is quite different from the Run N Shoot. The Run N Shoot is very similar to the West Coast offense now the vogue in the NFL. It has multiple reads and requires a great deal of timing and checking down your options. I note that during the preseason and the first two Redskins games, Jason Campbell looked completely lost, whereas Colt Brennan had no trouble with the offense (despite bad fundamentals in his passing style). So this offense apparently requires playing it. Further, practicing it against our scout team defense, is not at the same speed as BLM experiences when he plays in a real game against the likes of Tech and TCU. I suspect that both Willis and BLM were at about the same point as far as understanding the offense at the decision point. Coach Jones decided if both were at the same place, he might as well have the frosh get the on the job training needed since it was going to be an ugly season. Jones' stubbonness is one of the things that makes him a good coach. He knows his offense works, he knows he needs to train his personnel and it will take some time.
A pocket style passer is an excellent idea when you have an offensive line that can reliably maintain the pocket for long enough to go through the progressions, and when you have a corps of receivers that has perfected the precision timing and route running in the run and shoot, but a guy who can move to avoid the sack is not really that bad of an option while you wait to improve the supporting cast.
It is just frustrating to hear that a $2 million dollar coach should not be expected to even try to adapt his system to get the best result from the experienced talent he has (talent, however bad it was, that scored a lot of points with essentially the same supporting cast against essentially the same competition) --- at least until he can recruit better players to make a pocket passer more effective.
You've got it all figured out... and exactly what is that he would have learned from"JWill"? We've turned that page. Catch up.
Hey folks, let's not lose sight of the fact that the "experienced talent" he apparently has decided to overlook was 1-11 last year. I wanted Willis to start as much as the next guy (or gal), but just saying.... I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
