Future Games Against FCS Schools

Postby sbsmith » Wed Sep 24, 2008 1:29 pm

Why don't we have more games scheduled against FCS teams? It seems like the 2009 and 2012 games versus Stephen F. Austin are the only games versus a FCS team we have scheduled for future seasons. Could this possibly change? You'd think a rebuilding team would try to soften the schedule as much as possible to get some wins.

Aren't you limited to once every two years? At least in order that it count toward bowl eligibility?

replacing TTech with UNT is about as "soft" as the schedule should get. Those games against Texas State and other FCS schools have to be scheduled as a home opener for anyone to show up. Please no more than 1 of these games in a single season. Home and home games with UNT have been reasonably well attended and the opener (even against FCS schools) will draw pretty well, too...but let's not dumb it down just to record another W every year.

You want to make sure when you schedule a patsie that they are a patsie, so those games don't get scheduled until at most a year or two out. The last thing you want is to be beaten by a FCD team.

Jeff Sagarin NCAA football ratings:

But who is the patsy here?

No, you can count 1 per year towards bowl eligibility.

We've softened and softened and all that has changed is we've lowered our level of play to match theirs. It's time we act like big boys and play big boys. If we get beat, so be it. We are not going to get better by practicing against the Southland.

At the time SMU announced the scheduling of SFA for 2 future games I sent an email to Orsini expressing my displeasure with these two games. I believed that scheduling such games had absolutely no value and was disappointed with this approach for a program that needed credibility, would be on the rise and needed revenues. I noted that such games draw little if any fan interest, no media interest, no bowl committee consideration, put no butts in the stands, make no revenue, do not impress top recruits......etc. I received a very candid reply from one of the AD staff advising that that the previous administration had unbelievably scheduled two major BCS teams at the same time for both of those dates( I will not identify the teams involved or staff member in case the staff assistant mis-spoke in their response to me). Somone in the previous administration had obviously failed to pay attention to the dates. Despite intensive attempts to salvage both dates, the both teams refused to cooperate and both backed out leaving Orsini holding the bag. After beating the bushes to no avail, the SFA games were scheduled as a last resort to fill a schedule. This sounds incredulous; however, this was the explanation provided to me.

Pocono, my guess would be Northwestern and/or Wake Forest. Anyway, for now I guess it's good that Coach Mason doesn't have to play "anyone, anytime, anywhere."
I will not make age an issue in this campaign. I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience.
